THE Triangle African Choral Exchange (TACX) from the USA will be visiting Paarl tomorrow to perform with the Frank Pietersen Music Centre's choir. The concert will take place at the centre at 19:30. The Triangle Chorus, consisting of 23 singers, comes from a cluster of three cities in North Carolina in the United States, known as "The Triangle", hence the name. The singers range from post-college students to teachers, church musicians, current and retired academicians, administrative workers, programmers, medical researchers and videographers. Similar choruses of folks, who love to sing and share music with other cultures, were formed in the 90's and travelled to Russia and Israel. The Choir will be singing a variety of pieces ranging from American Folksongs to Classical and, together with local choirs, some South African popular songs. The choir is directed by Rodney Wynkoop, Director of University Choral and Chapel Music at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He conducts the University Chorale and its 24 Voice Chamber Choir as well as the Duke Chapel Choir and its smaller ScholaCantorum. Having been at Duke since 1984, Dr Wynkoop teaches choral conducting in the Music Department, and holds the title of Professor of Practice of Music. In addition to his choirs at Duke, Dr Wynkoop is conductor of the 150 voice choral society of Durham and its 32 voice chamber choir. He is also the founder and director of the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham, a highly acclaimed, professional-level choir. He has led choir tours to Russia, China, England, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and locations throughout the United States. Choirs under his direction have released numerous CD recordings, including two recordings of Handel's "Messiah" by the Duke Chapel Choir, Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", the Rachmaninoff "Vespers", and upcoming recordings on the Arsis label. Tickets are available from the Frank Pietersen Centre (tel 872-2123) at R20 (scholars R10). The choir will also perform in Piketberg and George. |

Kaartjies by Printright. |

DON'T miss 'Shirley Valentine', the production which Beverley Charpentier will be presenting at Café Delvera on Tuesday and Wednesday at 19:30. Shirley Valentine was written as a stage play and then became just as popular when made into a film. It is the story of a housewife whose dreams come true and carries a message that encourages all to take control of their lives. The story is told with wit, humour and great laughs. Café Delvera is situated on the Stellenbosch road (R44) before the Elsenburg turn-off. Tickets are R80 each and include a two course meal (excluding wine). Book with Elma on 863-0397 or 082-808-1114. |

THERE is a desperate shortage of pianos at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl. The centre is expanding and going from strength to strength, as was shown recently at the concerts at the Paarl Town Hall and at the Grande Roche Hotel. Guests were especially astounded by the Youth Symphony Orchestra's performance of the first movement of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. The current growth of the centre is unfortunately hampered by the shortage of pianos for teaching and the accompaniment of solo instruments. This is especially evident at this time of the year when learners are preparing for the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod and music examinations. The staff of the Centre is therefore making an urgent appeal to the public if anyone has an unused piano, and would like to make it available to them, this would be highly appreciated. A contract can be drawn up and the piano would be well maintained. Please contact the Centre's office at 872-2123/4 between 10:00 and 18:00. |
