WE know the problems with infrastructure, education and services, but now we are starting to do things for ourselves, said deputy mayor Anthea Sheldon on Saturday at the soil turning ceremony at the Nompumelelo Crèche in Phola Park, Mbekweni.
"We have wonderful, resourceful people in the community, people that can do things," she said, emphasising her pride in being a South African.
Nompumelelo was established in 1994 with 20 children and voluntary educators.
They started out in backyards, seeing the need to keep children safe and off the streets, especially while parents work.
Eventually the Municipality offered them a plot close to Desmond Tutu Secondary. However, they had no money to build and had to be satisfied with a makeshift shelter.
Grassroots trained the educators and the children's numbers swelled to 120.
Even with a subsidy from the Department of Social Services, they are struggling to keep standards up, as many parents are unemployed or seasonal workers.
In 2001 the Area Development Programme (ADP) became involved and helped the parents to start a vegetable garden at the school. With their help a sum of R85 000 was obtained from the De Ruyter Foundation.
While not enough to finish the building project, this money will go a long way in fulfilling their dreams.
With Fanie Sylvester as project manager, plans were drawn up and on Monday they started the groundwork.
The first phase will be an office, sick bay, hall and toilets.
Sylvester says they also plan a playroom and classes for the future.
"God gave us each a skill. My skill is to create, to take your children from the shacks and put them in decent buildings," he told the staff and parents.
"I will see that your money is wisely spent," he assured them and urged them to see that the building materials are kept safe from pilfering.
Malibongwe Fololo, ADP Programme Manager for Mbekweni, and his colleague, Pumla Mgayi, were there to celebrate with the community on Saturday.
Pastor Mqokeleli Nosipho Mnatanga from the Christian Community Centre urged the community to take ownership of the building:
"Before we can start building, we need to understand and to unite in mind, heart and spirit".
* The new school will need furnishings like carpets and furniture. Sponsorships for future developments will also be welcomed.
