Making waves

[ Top ]

John Goliath

ONE of the swimmers from the Paarl Aquarius Swimming Club is currently making big waves in the swimming pool.

Dominique October (16) was recently named among the top 30 swimmers in her age group in the country.

She also recently won the prize for  the swimmer of the year at the club.

Dominique, a grade 11 learner at La Rochelle Girls' High, has been swimming since the age of five and first represented Boland at the age of nine.
Isaac Kock, her coach at the club, says

PRACTICE. Dominique October trains in the swimming pool.

she is one of the most dedicated and technically correct swimmers he has had the pleasure of training.

From an early age it was thought that she had what it takes to be the best in this sport.

"Dominique has very strong legs and has a natural ability second to none. Her leg drive in the water is almost perfect," he says.

She hails from a family with a strong swimming heritage. Her father, Higenis, was one of the founder members of Paarl Aquarius. He was also a good swimmer and played water polo.

Her specialist event is the backstroke, where technique and the strength in one's legs is very important. When it comes to this event her competitors know they will be in for a long afternoon.

She also swims the freestyle and the butterfly stroke.

Dominique trains about six times a week with the other members of the club. They also do some aerobic exercises to strengthen their abdominal muscles.

Dominique does not only confine her talents to swimming. She is also a talented hockey player and has received provincial colours in the sport.

But her goal at the moment is to make the South African swimming team for the Pan Pacific Games next year.

Bright sparks travel to India

[ Top ]

THREE youngsters from Paarl are among a group of twelve learners at the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Constantia that will participate in an International Mathematics Convention in December.

Alan Nambiar, Mathematics Specialist at the Academy, was invited by the City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, the largest private school in the world, to participate in the convention.

Leighton Leukes, Robin Paulse and Timothy Sheldon from Paarl are amongst the Grade 10 pupils at the Academy that will travel to India to partake in the convention from 5 to 9 December.

The aims of the convention are to provide an opportunity for mathematical talent to be nurtured and stimulated in a creative an intellectually stimulating international environment and to engage learners with serious mathematical questions.

Furthermore, they aim to develop mathematical concepts and to strengthen the ability to use them in life, as well as to inculcate an awareness in young learners of the techniques in problem solving and experiencing tension, and enjoying the triumphs of self discovery.

They provide a forum for like minded learners to interact on an international platform and demonstrate their mathematical skill.

It will cost about R17 000 per pupil to attend the convention.
