THE profoundly moving story of Alan Paton about South Africa, "Cry, The Beloved Country", premièred at the Grahamstown Festival last week and opens at Artscape tonight.
This year sees the centenary of the birth of Alan Paton, one of South Africa's most distinguished writers. He was born in Pietermaritzburg on 11 January 1903, and lived most of his life in Kwazulu-Natal.
He celebrated the natural beauties of this province and the intricacies of South African society most vividly in his masterpiece, "Cry, The Beloved Country" - a story which continues to touch the hearts of people across boundaries of culture, language and generation.
The story of the noble Zulu Anglican priest who travels from Kwazulu-Natal's southern rural area to the city of Johannesburg in search of his son will be portrayed by a group of actors, led by acclaimed Johannesburg actor Ramolao Makhene.
Capetonian David Muller plays opposite Makhene as the farmer, James Jarvis.
Others in the ensemble are Nhanhla Mavundla, Roger Dwyer, Chris Gxalaba, Thobeka Maqhutyana, Matthew Wild, Morena Medi, Adrienne Pearce, Joko Scott, Leon Liebenberg, Nkuli Sibeko and Johan Vermaak.
Heinrich Reisenhofer is directing, with designs by Peter Cazalet and lighting by Kobus Rossouw. The adaptation is by Roy Sargeant. Music and dancing are staged by Nhanhla Mavundla.
Bookings can be made through Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 421-7695. |

Spider in the Coffin |

A LONDON based international theatre company, Act Provocateur International, will be presenting two productions at the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch soon.
The company presents two highly acclaimed productions, 'Lolita' and a joint Anglo-Russian world première 'Spider in the Coffin', on 10 and 11 July.
It will be hosted as a double-bill, kicking off the evening with the humorous "Spider in the Coffin" at 19:00, followed by the infamous "Lolita" at 21:00.
'Spider In The Coffin" is written by Victor Sobchak.
Two actors play out a death scene in an empty theatre with only a coffin, a spider and a web of their making. The rehearsal reaches its peak, but is everything really as it seems and just who is playing who? And is the play that they are rehearsing really in the script?
'Lolita' is Victor Sobchak's acclaimed and controversial adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's classic work.
Telling the story of a doomed and forbidden love, this original adaptation tells the compelling and often moving story of Lolita and Humbert without condoning or condemning and is as relevant and powerful today as it was fifty years ago.
Bookings and inquiries to be made at 883-8164 or 083-742-6547 or klt@adept.co.za.
You can obtain more information about the company at the Website www.actprovocateur.com. |
