Give them hugs, not drugs

wdrugsFCTHE "Ke Moja - No Thanks, I'm Fine!" drug awareness programme was launched nationwide recently and at the Office of the Department of Welfare in Paarl the theme was "Let's talk about Drugs".

Social worker for Drug Wise, Anna-Marie McGregor, spoke to parents as well as members of the Paarl East Welfare Forum on combatting this problem by speaking out

and recognising the risks associated with drug use.

Cape Town is considered the capital with the worst drug-related crime problems in the country.

This project will empower at-risk youth to make responsible choices by providing them with accurate information and drug awareness resistance skills.

According to statistics, drug users in South Africa are getting younger. A survey done recently showed that one fifth of primary school children tried drugs and alcohol in 2002.

ANTI-DRUGS. The Office of the Department of Welfare in Paarl  in conjunction with Drug Wise recently held a talk on "Lets talk about Drugs" on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (26 June). The aim is to encourage parents, family members, teachers and the youth to speak out on this problem as well as getting more involved in combatting it. At this event were (from left) Anna-Marie McGregor (social worker at Drug Wise), Alida de Goede (Department Social Work), Edith Abrahams (Department Social Work) and Alex Theo (Paarl East Welfare Forum).

The roll-out of the "Ke Moa" programme this year is being funded by the National Department for Social Development and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in partnership with the Central Drug Authority.

Men should have check-ups

[ Top ]

THE Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) focuses on "Men's Health" during June and July through awareness and educational campaigns, highlighting self-examination and early detection, especially of prostate and testicular cancer.

During the "Men's Health" campaign; CANSA distributes information and promotes awareness of male cancers as early diagnosis can save a life.

If you are a male or know, love and care about someone who is, remember:

* All males over the age of 40 should have a PSA test annually (blood test to detect prostate irregularity)

* Know your body and how it works - if you notice a change consult your doctor

* Practice a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, enjoy a diet low in fat and animal protein, don't smoke or drink

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms consult a doctor:

* Difficulty in passing urine

* Frequent need to urinate, especially at night

* Difficulty in starting and stopping the urinary stream

* Blood in the urine

* Painful burning sensation when passing urine

Any of the above signs combined with pains in the lower back, upper thighs or pelvic area warrant a doctor's opinion.

Do the Smart Thing - have your prostate checked. For more information contact CANSA tollfree line 0800 22 66 22.
