American line dancing is fun

wkarien26A YOUNG Paarlite, 11-year-old Karien van der Merwe, recently won five medals at the first ever SA nationals for American Country Line Dancing held in Durban.

Although only practised in South Africa for the last five years, line dancing seems to be attracting more and more enthusiasts, says Karien's mom, Karin, herself a line dance instructor.

"People from as young as three and as old as 90 can participate in this fun recreational sport - and what's more you don't need a partner," says Karin.

country and waltz to Latin and Irish riverdancing.

At the SA Champs Karien competed in the Newcomers class where she came second in the category for traditional country (ages 10 to 14 years).

She ruled in the waltz, Latin and Irish riverdance categories however, and took home gold. She was rewarded with another gold medal in the category for Own Choreographed Dance. Karien also won the trophy for the over-all champion in the Newcomers category. Her team, the Bootscooter Barn Owls, also came second in the team competition.

Heritage outing

ON Saturday the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation  undertakes an outing to Swaarmoed in the Ceres area, along the route of the Trekboers, with special interest in the farm Uitkomst. The homestead has a Georgian homestead with strong vernacular influences.

The group will depart from the Strooidak Church at 09:00 and travel through Ceres to the Karoo via Langfontein, Matjiesrivier and Verlorenvlei and return via the Hex River Valley, where tea will be provided on the farm Clovelly.

* A slide presentation on Malacca will be presented tonight at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl at 20:00. Len Raymond will discuss this Eastern city with a related history and influence to the Cape. Entry is R10 (R15 non-members).


Opera Pops in Paarl

POPULAR songs from the opera and musicals will be showcased when Cape Town Opera presents its widely acclaimed Opera Pops in Paarl on Sunday to raise funds for the Paarl Boys' High Music Department. The bubbly performance will be held from 17:00 to 18:30 at the Grande Roche Hotel Amphitheatre.

The stars of the Demindex/Cape Town Opera Studio will be accompanied by pianist Ean Smit. Matthew Wild is the director.

The programme features among others the Brindisi from Verdi's La Traviata, the Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's The Magic Flute, the Bell Song from Delibe's Lakme and Adele's Laughing Song from Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus.

Duets include the Flower Duet from Pucini's Madama Butterfly, the duet for tenor and bariton from Bizet's the Pearl Fishers and the sextet from Kurt Weill's Street Scene. A medley from West Side Story and a duet from Schonberg's Miss Saigon are also on the programme.

Bring your own cushions. The Amphitheatre does not have padded seats. In the event of rain, the concert will move to the Paarl Boys' High Hall. Tickets are available at R50 from Elza Truter, 082-654-4856.

Light snacks and a cash bar will be available at R20 (optional) after the performance (at the Boys' High Clubhouse in Brug Street).


Michaelis op La Motte

DIE Michaelis-trio tree Saterdag om 19:00 in die Ou Wynkelder op La Motte wynlandgoed op.

 Die trio is vyf jaar gelede gestig en het sedertdien in al die vernaamste sale in Kaapstad opgetree. Lucia Scott (viool), Barbara Kennedy (tjello) en Lisa Garson (klavier) is bekend vir hulle interessante programme en voortreflike spel. 

Op La Motte speel hierdie trio onder meer Brahms se grootskaalse Klaviertrio in b mineur opus 8, asook werke van Rameau, Turina en die Argentynse komponis Piazzolla. 

Die aand word afgesluit met 'n ongewone verwerking van Gershwin se treffer, "Summertime", uit die opera "Porgy and Bess".

Simon vier fees

STELLENBOSCH vier op Saterdag 26 Oktober sy 36ste Simon van der Stel Fees om die verjaarsdag van sy stigter, goewerneur Simon van der Stel, te herdenk.

Die fees begin met die Goewerneur se Verjaarsdagbanket wat die aand van Vrydag 11 Oktober in die Stadsaal aangebied word. Die funksie sal bestaan uit 'n smaakvolle ete met wyn, vermaak en musiek waarby ook gedans word.

Met die fees word 'n greep uit die geskiedenis uitgebeeld. Die wins gaan vir liefdadigheid.

Die Goewerneur, oud-Paarliet prof Ronnie Belcher, nooi alle Paarliete om die fees by te woon.

Kaartjies vir die Verjaarsdagbanket teen R230 per paar is te koop by die Stellenbosse Inligtingsburo in Markstraat, Stellenbosch (883-3584).

Die drag is baadjie en das, maar gaste word aangemoedig om in tradisionele kostuums te kom. Kostuums is verkrygbaar uit die Simon van der Stel Burgerraad se garderobe (Hermien Visser 881-3252).

Die fees word Saterdag 26 Oktober voortgesit met 'n groot kermis op die Braak, wat ingelui word met 'n hysing van die VOC- en dorpsvlag.
