A MARCH against crime will take place on Saturday 19 October in Paarl at 09:00, moving from Paarl East Police Station to Central Paarl as part of Operation Sunshine.
Crime in South Africa is rampant, hence the President's call to government departments to play a major role in uprooting crime as well as to strive for effective service delivery and alleviate poverty.
A platform for inter-sectoral partnerships has been formed in Drakenstein to strive for effective service delivery by the various government departments in partnership with stakeholders to providing community protection, stability and development.
The stakeholders are the local Departments of Correctional Service, the SAPS, traffic, Drakenstein Municipality, ambulance services, neighbourhood watches, Paarl Social Work Services, Community Policing Forums, PSA and Popcru.
One of the aims is to target local schools and institutions for crime awareness information sessions, which will culminate in the march on 19 October.
The purpose of the march is to focus community attention on crime and crime prevention, to highlight the combined efforts in addressing crime, communicate the commitment to effective service delivery and highlight social issues such as child abuse, rape, domestic violence and HIV/Aids.
The group further wants to stress the fact that not all government employees are corrupt, and encourages community involvement in the fight against crime.
They had already started their programme of action with integrated roadblocks and crime prevention patrols.
The Police will assist the Community Corrections Monitoring and Absconder Units on their visits to probationers and with the tracing of absconders.
Innovative initiatives regarding poverty alleviation already exist and Correctional Services has identified two hectares of agricultural land where vegetables will be cultivated solely for the benefit of the needy and underprivileged in the community.
