CHILDREN from Dalabuhle Primary, located in the Njojombeni squatter camp in Franschhoek, marched to the municipal building recently to protest overcrowded conditions at the school.
The junior classes are located in a temporary wooden building, while the senior classes are housed at Groendal Primary.
According to the teachers, the school must be expanded on one site, where the junior classes are located, but negotiations have been unsuccessful.
According to a spokesman for the Stellenbosch Municipality, expansion of the school cannot take place before residents have been moved to formal housing.
"In the process of moving people from the informal area to new housing, efforts will be made to open the area next to the school for possible future extensions, should the Department of Education require it.
"As yet, no formal request has been received from the Department to date, and we are surprised by the actions of the school, which demanded immediate confirmation that the land would be made available," the spokesman said.
"We share their concern over the lack of classroom space and are willing to help by contributing land in future, as in the past." |
