wspilo5 FOR some 120 children living with or orphaned by the Aids pandemic, National Aids Day had extra-special meaning this year.

Not only were they honoured in light of their circumstances and as victims of the relentless killer disease, but they were given an opportunity to experience the joy of the festive season at a Christmas

party held at Drakenstein Correctional Facility on Friday by Versapak packaging.

year-end corporate celebrations and instead embark on a drive to bring some light, laughter, fun and love into the lives of these impoverished and desperate young South Africans.

The Christmas party was a highlight for the children whose lives are dominated by circumstances the average South African has difficulty in even comprehending.

Boys and girls aged between one and twelve years old, accompanied by their caregivers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and mothers were transported from Paarl and Atlantis for array of entertainment, tractor-rides and presentation of gifts by Santa, as well as lunch.

"As a company which enjoys the rewards of success throughout the year, this Christmas party is one very small way in which we can give back - not only in financial terms - but in the giving of our time and adding some quality to their lives," said Versapak MD Mark Thatcher.

Proceeds of funds raised by the company will by allocated to the Paarl East Hospital children's clinic.

DIE Franschhoek Polisie bied tot Sondag 'n spesiale kinderprogram in vennootskap met die Departement van Veiligheid en Sekuriteit, kerke, skole en organisasies sos Nicro, Flac en Mozaik aan.

Dit is deel van die "Hands off our Children" (Hooc) veldtog en beoog om veral vroue en kinders te bemagtig, te beskerm en bewus te maak van ongehoorde kriminele gedrag teen hulle.

Daar sal daagliks 'n program aangebied word met opvoerings, werkswinkels oor gesinsgeweld en arbeidswetgewing asook optogte teen drank- en dwelmmisbruik. Die kinders sal ook besoek bring aan tronke en fabrieke.

Holiday workshops for kids

IZIKO Museums in Cape Town offer a week of fun-filled workshops for children aged between 8 and 12 years, from 11 to 18 December.

All workshops are based on exhibitions and collections at Iziko's different venues and include mask-making at the Slave Lodge, building a model house and experiencing the Cape of yesteryear at Koopmans-de Wet House, working with fossils at the SA Museum, playing at pirates at Muizenberg's Natale Labia Museum, and - after touring the William Kentridge and Handspring Puppet exhibitions at the Gallery - creating exciting mosaics and shadow puppets.

The workshops take place from 10:00 to 12:00 and cost R10 each. Children younger then 8 years should be accompanied by an adult.

Taste fest at Simonsvlei

THIS weekend Simonsvlei presents its monthly taste fest. On Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00 and Sunday from 11:00 to 14:00 enjoy olives, olive oil, pestos, chilli-jelly, cheeses and herbs from the region to taste and buy. Entrance is free.

On 18 December a Christmas Taste Fest can be enjoyed from 14:00 to 21:00, to coincide with their Twilight Run. This will continue from Thursday 19 December to Saturday 21 December daily from 10:00 to 15:00.

* Simonsvlei recently won the Woolworths Red Wine of the Year Award with their 2002 Merlot, which is marketed by Woolworths under the Longmarket label.

Pret vir jongspan by biblioteke

DIE Meulstraat biblioteek het 'n interessante program vir die jongspan volgende week. Alles is gratis.

Maandag en Dinsdag van 09:30 tot 11:30 kan hulle knip en plak. Elkeen moet sy eie skêr saambring.

Woensdag van 14:00 tot 16:00 kan hulle na die video 'Ice Age' kyk en Donderdag om 09:00 is daar 'n poppekas en Kersverrassing by die Lutherse kerksaal, langs die biblioteek.

Die biblioteek sluit Vrydag 13 Desember om 13:00 en open eers weer op Dinsdag 17 Desember.

* Op Franschhoek kan die jongspan Dinsdag Kerskaarte maak en Donderdag 12 Desember is daar 'n Afrikaanse storie-uur. Die programme is van 11:00 tot 12:00.
