House of strength

[ Top ]

whouse6AS from today we're in business. With these words Virginia Petersen, Superintendent General of Social Services in the Western Cape, realised a long cherished dream of the AHOS committee (Athlone House of Strength) in Paarl

She visited the Athlone Trust's offices last week to discuss the plans for a house to look after abandoned, abused and neglected children.

Petersen emphasised the need to reach out to these children, but also to keep them, wherever possible in their family unit.

COMMITTEE. Virginia Petersen, Superintendent General Social Services (front left) and Debbie van Stade, assistant director (right), with the AHOS committee. In front with them is Pat Martin (chairperson) and at the rear are Dulcie Davids (vice chairperson), Ray Gabriels, Serena Samaii, Enith Schuler and Beatrice Kruger (assistant secretary).

"My vision is to get children off the street within the first 24 hours.

"But we must reach out and look at reconciling the child with his family."

The idea for a 'House of Strength' began in 1999. Pat Martin was instrumental in realising the plight of abused children and women.

She invited two members each from the five churches constituting the Athlone Trust and the AHOS committee was established.

Their vision was communicated to the Athlone Trust who pledged support for this initiative.

AHOS' mission is to provide a stable, caring and safe environment to abandoned, abused and neglected children and women.

The want to reintegrate children with their families or with caring families in the community.

Furthermore, they want to provide support to abused women.

AHOS and Social Welfare will now work towards an agreement of co-operation.

The Athlone Trust asked that a study of social issues in general be included in this agreement.

John Martin, CEO of Athlone, says this will help them to better identify needs and to address these needs more effectively.

A work meeting will take place on 18 February to discuss the way forward.

Pat Martin can be contacted at 862-2362.

Later is better

CHRISTMAS came a bit late, deliberately so, to the pre-school kids in the Franschhoek squatter settlement. Experience has shown that after Christmas and New Year the poor are even poorer. The children who depend on soup kitchens for food, need it even more after the holidays.

For this reason Susan Huxter, chairperson of Franschhoek Vallée Tourisme, decided to give a Post Christmas party to the children, normally fed by the Khumalo Soup Kitchen.

This is part of Franschhoek Vallée Tourisme's ongoing action to work with the poorer children in the community. The main thrust of these efforts are to help feed them, to create activities to keep off the streets in the holidays and to help train them so that they are able to eventually get tourist jobs.

Manna Khumalo, who suffers from chronic asthma and is nearly blind, founded the soup kitchen eight years ago. She has kept it going despite being unable to work because of her illness.

When it runs out of money, she walks the few kilometres into town to get funds from people for whom she used to work.

The soup kitchen is partially funded by some private individuals, the Baptist Church and the Christelike Vroue Vereniging.

The kitchen has funds to feed 60 pre-school children four days a week, but Khumalo often has to turn away the same number again, who queue for hours in order to get a cup of soup.

Vir navrae, bel Bosch of Pieter Lovick by 884-4600.
