THE opera Hansel & Gretel can be seen at the Spier Summer Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Known for its highly original synthesis of traditional German folk songs and sophisticated Wagnerian musical techniques, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel is an opera that bewitches children and fascinates adults. Janice Honeyman, as director, transports her now famous 'plastic panto' feel to the forests of African folklore, where cannibalistic witches, demonic snakes and other malevolent creatures watch from the shadows. Directed by Christopher Dowdeswell. Tickets are R50, R80, R120. * Tomorrow Earthdiving can be seen, as well as on Wednesday 12, Friday 14 and Saturday 15. Earthdiving is a brand new South African opera, inspired by San initiation rituals and world mythology. It examines the tension of power and love within a family, their community and their environments. Director Nancy Diuguid effortlessly combines the simplicity and immediacy of ritual with cutting edge technology. Both music and text draw on a wide variety of influences with a particular South African identity. The award-winning and professional cast of singers and dancers, alongside the chamber orchestra and African percussionists, move the audience to unexpected places. Peter Louis van Dyk, Martin Phipps and Mokale Koapeng's score is a dialogue between African, choral and ritual music with European contemporary, classical opera and jazz. The cast includes Mandlenkosi Mkhize Abel Moeng, Philisa Sibeko, Aletta Bezuidenhout and Miranda Tini with choreography by Boyzie Cekwana. Bookings at Spier on 809-1177/78/79/49, Computicket 083-915-8000 or email cindyw@spier.co.za. |
