Taking chess to the townships

[ Top ]

FIFTY young chess players from Mbekweni schools will have a chance of a lifetime during the coming summer holidays.

They will visit the HMS Glasgow in the Cape Town harbour and play chess against the crew of the ship.

The kids are taking part in the police project Sport against Crime.

"It is very easy to talk about crime prevention and keeping children from the streets. But it takes hard work, dedication and a lot of inspiration and involvement of parents, teachers and sponsors to do this," said inspector .

CHESS MOVES. Peter Mickle, Insp Laurian Foster and Insp Nompumelelo Samson with some of young players from Mbekweni.

Laurian Foster, social crime prevention officer of the Mbekweni SAPS.

She heads this project aimed at the pupils of Ihlumelo, Desmond Tutu, Mbekweni Primary, Langabuya and Imboniselo.

Earlier this year, 50 chess sets where donated to schools in Mbekweni and Martin Serfontein of Chess South Africa held a demonstration on how to play this tactical board game.

The sets were donated by the Stanley Grundy Chess Foundation through Rotary International, with Serfontein and his wife, Ida, of the Boland Chess Union, co-ordinating the local distribution of the sets.

Recently Peter Mickle, secretary of Boland Chess and involved with Taking Chess to Townships, visited Desmond Tutu for more tutoring.

Persons interested in the project can contact insp Foster at 807-4327 or 073-207-4614
