Flying visit for local chef

[ Top ]

SO impressed was the South African High Commissioner in London, Lindiwe Mabuza, by the dishes she tasted at a Paarl restaurant, that the chef has been invited to cook for her gala dinner in London.

Craig McGeean, chef at the restaurant at Pontac Manor House since June, departs for London on 19 September to attend and serve at the High Commission's upcoming dinner.

This event will be held on 21 September to show appreciation for the many generous sponsors of South Africa's 10th Anniversary of Democracy Celebrations currently hosted throughout the United Kingdom.

The guests will rank amongst some of the country's most loyal and generous supporters.

Said Deseré Orrill-Legg, director of Pontac Manor Hotel & Restaurant: "It is an honour for Paarl that a local chef has received such a prestigious invitation."

Adds an excited Craig: "I have never been outside Africa and can't wait for this first trip to England."

He calls himself an ordinary guy who likes making extraordinary food.

"I like making real food with only the freshest produce, using simple ingredients in new combinations."

He gained previous experience at the Capetonian, Michelangelo Hotel, Fancourt and La Couronne (Franschhoek).

Award for best adult learner

THE winners of the Provincial Adult Learners Week Awards were announced at the Transnet Heritage Museum in George last week.

One of the winners was Mathilda Kempers of Paarl. She was selected with Deborah Nooi, Marlene Conradie and Catherina Valleray Jacobs not only for her commitment to education while overcoming adverse circumstances, but also for being involved in community projects.

Mathilda, winner of the Best Learner Award for the West Coast/Winelands has hardly missed a day's lessons during the past five years and has passed Abed level 3.

She meets deadlines and actively encourages her co-workers at the farm Sonneskyn, north of Paarl, to study.

Mathilda's involvement at her Adult Learning Centre extends to her participation on the governing body of the local school.

She runs an informal study group at home, which she encourages people to attend.

The awards ceremony, one of the highlights at the Provincial Adult Learners Week in George, formed part of the Learning Cape Festival (12 August to 10 September).

Western Cape Education Department's co-ordinator for the Learning Cape Festival, Jewel Jonkers, said awards such as these encouraged learners.

"The winners show a commitment to education that motivates others, particularly when they are seen to go beyond difficult circumstances to achieve."

Brood sny swaar

[ Top ]

Leraarskring gestig

[ Top ]
