HIV/Aids the single biggest threat to youth

[ Top ]

THE single most important threat to the wellness of the young sportsmen and women of our country is HIV/Aids.

The department of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation has identified sports as a vehicle to champion the campaign against this scourge, said MEC Chris Stali at the launch of the Junior Sports Ambassadors programme at the Boland Cricket Grounds in Paarl.

"These junior ambassadors are not only expected to excel on the field, but can help us tremendously in encouraging healthy lifestyles among their peers.

"The Department will utilize the findings of this report to put in place programmes that will ensure that the vulnerability of our sportspersons are minimized.

HOOPVOL. Freddy Lakay van die Drakenstein Hospice, lid van die plaaslike Vigs Aksiegroep, het verlede Woensdag op Vigsdag die kers aangesteek tydens 'n gedenkdiens in die Strauss-saal.

However, this responsibility remains with an individual.

"As more and more youth are experiencing conflict at home, substance abuse within the family, less access to their parents and the use of television as their primary source of entertainment and values, consequently they increasingly appear to be displaying impulsive and dysfunctional behaviour both at home and at school.

"These problems that the youth experience should be seen in the context of the Western Cape as a centre with a very high rate of violent crimes (which are mostly gang related) and high HIV/Aids and TB infection rates.

"The Youth Development Policy Framework, 2001 estimates that in just 8 years' time the HIV infection rate will increase tenfold.

"The youth is not only vulnerable, but also in a period of identity formation, values clarification and experimentation.

"It is in this transformatory period from childhood to young adulthood that a critical opportunity presents itself to steer them in a positive direction and make them resilient against the onslaught of HIV/Aids and other social challen-ges.

"This is the period that the locus of control should be gradually shifted from parents back to the youth.

"An important question is: What space do we utilize to intervene amongst the youth? An important gathering place for youths is sport.

"Here they have a common purpose and goal and develop a sense of camaraderie. This cements relationships and inter-responsibility, not only on the sports field, but in a broader context."

Stali said sports people are symbolic of health and the best a country can offer.

"They are our champions. Champions mirror role models that the rest can follow. Therefore they must be focused on goal and model responsible behaviour.

"They set examples of how to engage with and respond to this HIV/Aids challenge in our country.

"It is through their practices, attitudes and example that the rest will be empowered and inspired to follow.

"In this way our sport champions are emulated and create or give birth to a new generation of young people that are aware, knowledgeable and responsible," he said.
