Blood, sweat and gears

SOME 170 mountainbikers battled it out for top honours at the 24Hour Wiesenhof event which was held this weekend.

Defending champion in the solo class, Stokkies Rossouw from Paarl, could not repeat his success of last year, having to settle for second place behind William Keith of Somerset West.

Keith, riding for Maverick Cycles, managed to complete 39 rounds in the designated 24 hours. Some shut-eye gave him the edge and he ensured the title thanks to his renewed energy. Keith's 39 rounds equals approximately 250km and a total of 4546m elevation climbed.

Rossouw pumped hard to clock 38 rounds taking short breaks after each round.

"The competition was definitely a lot tougher than last year. Last year I won by 34 rounds. The rider who finished third in

AUTOMATIC PILOT. A tired Stokkies Rossouw enroute to complete his second last round during the 24Hour Wiesenhof mountainbike event which was held this weekend.

the 2003 competition completed 28 rounds. If you managed 28 rounds this year you would not have finished anywhere," the Paarlite said on Monday.

Tim Brink, a resident of Hout Bay and deputy editor of Bicycling Magazine finished third, with the first woman rider, Hannele Steyn-Kotzé, fourth. Both weaved around the 6km course 36 times.

Rossouw took the same approach to the race which assured him success last year.

"I rode straight through the night, without sleeping and choosing to only rest at the most 20 minutes at a time between rounds," says Rossouw.

During these intervals his wife, Esmé, was his saving grace, says Rossouw, as she massaged his legs, back and neck while bike mechanic Neil O'Connell made sure Rossouw's bike stayed in good racing condition.

"It's a very bumpy and dusty course and your bike doesn't last more than six laps at a time, with the powder-like dust getting into everything."

Although minor stomach cramps and a bit of dizziness troubled Rossouw in the wee hours, he pedalled through it.

The batteries of his bike lights also literally left him in the dark for a couple of rounds, and was the cause for a head-over-heels tumble around 03:00 Sunday morning.

"My initial aim was for 40 laps, but 38 isn't bad. I am however definitely going to either borrow or hopefully receive a sponsored dual suspension mountainbike next year.

"Brink said he could not believe that someone could withstand this bumpy course for 24 hours on a hard tail (bike without rear suspension).  It really takes a lot out of you, especially when you ride over the numerous tree trunks and roots on the course," said Rossouw who rides for Hein Kroff Cycles from Paarl.

As was the case last year, Stokkies this week again struggled with a blue rear end, but fortunately suffered less chafing than last year.

One of the four teams from Paarl's Huguenot Cycles took the honours in the open class of the relay team event and was also crowned the overall team champions.

The Huguenot Red team consisting of Dennis du Toit, Murray Roberts, Fritz Basson and Temlett Hockey raced around the course 64 times, beating the Unleash team by two rounds.

"Temlett and Fritz started the race at 12:00 on Saturday as Dennis and myself were still busy at the cycling shop.

"When we arrived at the event at 13:30 we really turned on the gas and pedalled hard to close the gap on Unleash," said Roberts on Monday.

"In the early morning hours we managed to catch up to them and from then on managed to maintain a 30 minute lead."

Each of the riders completed the route 16 times with Hockey racing a 17th lap.

"The rules state that when the clock strikes 12:00 one of the team members must be on the route. So, when I finished at 11:45, Temlett took off for the final round and finished at 12:30," said Murray.

The Huguenot team also won the 24Hour MTB event which was held at Malmesbury earlier this year. It was a far easier victory, however, with the Paarl team winning by seven rounds. The Huguenot GoGirls team won the mixed teams category by completing 58 rounds on Saturday

Paarl Cricket still unstoppable

[ Top ]

THE Paarl Cricket Club's three senior teams are going from strength to strength in the Boland Cricket Board's competitions, each heading the log in their respective leagues.

The Novel Paarl first team is unbeaten, while the second and third teams have each suffered one defeat.

At the Parys Grounds, Paarl I brushed aside any potential threat by poorly placed Malmesbury on Saturday, winning easily by six wickets after bowling out the visitors for 132 in the 44th over.

The home team had the advantage of overcast conditions early on, giving new ball bowlers Anwell Newman and Denver van Reenen the opportunity to each grab one of Malmesbury's opening batsmen.

They set the stage for Utallyn Ernstzen (5/22) to mesmerise the opponents with his swing bowling and rip the heart out of their batting line-up.

Ernstzen, who was the Paarl Player of the Month in November, boasted four wickets for five runs after his first six overs, but it was eventually left to spinners Alfredo Adams (1/5) and Faghrie Jacobs (2/14) to wrap up the innings.

In the absence of the regular opening batsman, Newman (57) went out for some much needed batting practice, and entertained the crowd with four sixes and six boundaries in his 39 ball stay.

His first wicket partnership of 86 runs with Carlo Crotz (28) took the sting out of Malmesbury's bowling attack, for captain Lynal Jansen (17 not out 4x3) and Hilton Solomons (18 not out 4x2, 6x1) to cruise to Paarl's ninth successive victory with an unbeaten 33 run partnership for the fifth wicket.

On the B pitch Paarl III had no trouble, winning by 7 wickets against Paarl East.

Fine bowling by Robin Andrews (4/9) and Hein Adonis (4/18) saw the visitors tumbling for 136 in the 40th over, with Cloete (32), Goliath (22) and Jacobs (24) offering the only resistance.

After opener, captain Andrew Cupido, scored (36 4x7) a neat innings by Enrico Daniels (41 not out 4x7) saw his team home, with excellent support coming from Andrews (25 not out 4x2) in an unbeaten 70 run partnership for the fourth wicket.

In Malmesbury, Paarl II overcame the early controversy when the home team used a ball prescribed for halfday cricket to complete the treble for their club.

After initially struggling on 131/4 against the excessively swinging ball, Paarl set a target of 201, with captain Marco Walters (66) steadying the ship up front. Walters faced 142 balls to hit six boundaries and two sixes.

Other useful contributions came from Richard Cunningham (22 4x3) and Kurt Martin (21 4x2). Wayne Lategan (20) top scored for the home team, but after he was clean bowled by Rohan Goetham (3/19), his team collapsed against Lyndon Fredericks (3/25) and Cunningham (2/17).

Paarl's only team in action on Saturday will be Paarl III against Young Peoples at Dal Josaphat.

Dawie maak amok in Verenigde State

[ Top ]

Spele gee atlete waardevolle ondervinding

[ Top ]
