A PAARLITE has been selected as one of eight pioneering students to receive the Mandela-Rhodes scholarship for postgraduate
studies. The aim of the scholarship is to promote African leadership for the future and will expand throughout Africa after 2006.
Riaan Oppelt (23), former William Lloyd Primary and Noorder Paarl Senior Secondary School pupil, has received the new scholarship
to support his Master's studies in English at the University of the Western Cape in 2005.
Riaan matriculated with distinctions in English and Afrikaans, which enabled him to pursue advanced first year English studies at
UWC in 2000.
In 2001 he received the Baubette Taute bursary for academic excellence, followed by the Hogskolan scholarship to Sweden after which
he went to Bard College in New York for a year (2002 to 2003), with the annual Program in International Education scholarship.
At Bard Riaan pursued his lifelong interests in filmmaking and playwriting, and also wrote sports and entertainment columns in the
Bard Observer.
While in New York, Riaan became the second South African in two years to earn the Vassar College Powerhouse Theatre scholarship,
which enabled him to work alongside recognised American actors as an apprentice and a playwright.
One of his plays was performed and one was read at the annual Outdoor Shakespeare festival. While at Vassar he also received the
Helen Bernstein Arts bursary to support him.
Whilst still an active playwright and actor at UWC, Riaan also works as an English tutor for first and second year students and as
a journalist for Career Update Magazine, a conglomerate project between South Africa and Norway.
He has performed poetry in America and contributed film criticism to online news/student sites.
Currently he is in a rock band, which he co-founded, called "The Tunes". He composes original songs and plays bass guitar and
piano.
"The opportunities this scholarship provides are enormous for young Africans with all the potential but few resources," says Riaan.
"I am grateful to the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and am excited to see this expand throughout our continent." (The
other local bursary winner is Hanru Niemand, as reported last week).
