THE first model airplane show that was hosted by the Boland Model Aircraft Club (Bomac) recently, drew a large number of spectators.

"It is the first time that Bomac hosted such an event at our grounds at Nelson's Creek for the public and we are thrilled by the turnout," says Alan Carpenter of Bomac, which has some 30 members.

"Members from clubs as far afield as Worcester, Helderberg and Cape Town participated and we are hoping to make it an annual event,"

UP WE GO! Alan Carpenter of Paarl gets set to let his Extra 260 plane take off during the Boland Model Aircraft Club's show at Nelson's Creek. Some 100 planes, jets and helicopters took to the sky to the delight of the many spectators.

The intention of the show was to introduce people to the sport of model airplane flying.

For those interested in taking up the sport, an ideal starters package has a basic electronic glider which is simple to operate and will cost you around R1500.

Bigger planes boast a two-stroke petrol engine similar to that of a lawnmower and can cost between R5000 and R40 000.

The members fly every Sunday from 09:00 if the weather permits it. Spectators and those interested in joining are welcome to join them at their club grounds. Phone Conrad Cloete on 072-183-6943 or 872-9814 (h) for more information.
