Choose life, not crime

[ Top ]

THE Drakenstein Medium B Prison recently hosted a Sport Against Crime rugby and soccer tournament.

Soccer and rugby teams from all Western Cape juvenile institutions together with four community teams from Elsies River participated in the event.

The tournament was organised by the community project of Elsies River and sponsored by the Department of Community Safety and Security.

The purpose of the event was to send a message to the youth, outside and inside prisons, that crime doesn't pay.

MP Mnyamezeli Booi (member of the Correctional Services Portfolio Committee) addressed the spectators and appealed to the community to assist DCS in the integration of prisoners when they leave prison.

He urged the inmates to use  the opportunities presented to them by his department to become law-abiding citizens.

According to the project facilitator,William Sampie of Elsies River, the tournament was to show prisoners that by choosing sport instead of crime, they will be contributing to making South Africa a better country.

Friends fight aliens

[ Top ]

THE Friends of Bain's Kloof plan to tackle alien plants on the route this weekend, weather permitting.

Be sure to bring food and drink for the day and make sure the clothes you wear are old and your shoes tough. Gloves would be a good idea too. If you have hatchets, loppers and small bowsaws bring them along.

The group meets Saturday at Eerste Tol (Bain's Kloof Village) at about 09:30 to work for a few hours followed by a bit of socialising. Members will also be brought up to date on what they have so far achieved and plans for the future.

To confirm, phone Johan Visser on 873-2739 of 082-822-5271.

Groente hul lewens

[ Top ]

Agttien vroue is by die projek, wat bekend staan as "Let us grow women", ingeskakel.
