 Letters - Briewe

Is there any hope for Paarl businesses at all?

[ Top ]

WHAT a wonderful front page article in Paarl Post last week (Is there hope for Paarl? 3 October) - a dream which one longs for and hopes to become a reality.

Indeed one despairs at the way this beautiful town, in particular the CBD area, looks more and more like a third world town.

One applauds the initiative of the business people of Paarl, "Paarl Our Business", for taking a step both verbally and financially to do something about the deplorable situation of the CBD.

Certainly there is no point in waiting for the local municipality to take action - they will still be talking about it in ten years' time.

Certain businesses who take a stand against street traders are intimidated by hawkers and beggars - try to get a KFC take-away in Main Road without being "ushered" into a parking area by at least four "helpers", and then beggars all but take your purchases away from you as you leave the premises.

A greater police presence on foot in the streets would make a whole lot of difference. It has been proven throughout the world that a police presence on the streets depletes crime - have the police department in Paarl ever read this sort of literature and statistics?

If businesses in Paarl wish to improve they must make a stand and not fear being shot at, stabbed or intimidated by crooks and gangs on the fringes of this town.

How large organisations have tolerated for so many years the obstruction of their shop windows by street traders, when they obviously pay high rates to the Municipality, one just can not comprehend.

It's high time the Municipality moves these street traders to the specific designated areas where they can trade to the people who really want to buy their goods.

Finally, the Traffic Department should do their job with energy and conviction rather than spend enormous time and energy on issuing parking and speeding tickets.

They should not be intimidated by taxi drivers and taxi owners, but get those dilapidated and dangerous vehicles off the roads.

To have hope one must believe in what one wants and must deal with all things in an honest manner and with openness and transparency - only then will the hope become a reality.

I, for one, wish "Paarl Our Business" well and hope that many members of the public, like myself, will find ways of supporting the dream.

Beware of braking at these bumper drivers

[ Top ]

IN response to Biebie Barbara Britz' letter regarding "Bumper to bumper intercourse" on the roads, I would like to give her a warning about braking to ward off bumper drivers.

I, too, dislike intensely the habit of people driving on one's bumper and early one evening on my way home, just as it was getting dark, a vehicle (taxi minibus) drove closer and closer to my bumper, completely unnerving me.

I tapped my brake to indicate my discomfort and the taxi driver slackened immediately.

What happened next left me shaking and in a complete state - after a car passed on my left, the taxi driver went into the left lane and after passing my car, immediately turned into the right lane (in front of me) and put on his brakes, causing me to stand on my brakes to avoid hitting him!

The taxi driver was clearly very irate at my action, however, he should not have been driving on top of my bumper in the first place.

With hindsight, I should have realised he was capable of doing something so reckless and dangerous, we all know that taxi drivers are a law unto themselves.

Unfortunately, I was too distressed to think of taking his licence number, but had I possessed a handgun, I believe I would have used it!

Paarl lyk nog nooit soos Hollywood!

[ Top ]

Editorial:

Don't reap the whirlwind

[ Top ]

SERVICE DELIVERY, that is the key word which goes straight to the hearts of most Drakensteiners.

The present hullaballoo about politicians switching political affiliations like spoilt children in a sweet shop, leaves most ratepayers cold.

If you have braved all the rubbish on the pavements (if there are any), steered your car through and around all the potholes, and then successfully waded through all the beggars and street people to your destination, you are not inclined to be bothered by the infighting of politicians.

Ever since politics entered the local government arena, it was very easy for councillors to blame everything on the other side not holding up their end.

As time went by, this became even easier, with elections producing more and more discarded politians and parties to take the blame.

Hopefully the present whirlwind won't cause us to reap another harvest of hollow promises and unenforced decisions.

Most ratepayers will be content if they can look forward to a council where the interests of Drakenstein will be uppermost and where councillors will actually spend more time on issues that are important to John Citizen than on politicking.
