GRAAG wil ek vir Mnr sonder Naam aanvat oor 'n paar aangeleenthede en my ondersteuning by mnr Philip Wessels van BoE Bank gooi. Vra my, ek was drie jaar lank deel van 'n besigheid juis in daardie gebied.

WHILE reading the letters page of the Paarl Post dated 4 April I came across the letter concerning the removal of the parking bays in front of BoE Bank. Though this action, as a concerned resident of our town, also upsets me, it was the reply by the Managing Director that caught my attention. For a man of his high stature and discretion I am amazed at the threat made at the end of his reply. Sir, it really looks like you are trying to shoot yourself in the foot. I think you should have given the letter to your public relations department and kept yourself busy with running your bank. Bemused reader |

I ALWAYS thought that the Paarl Post reported objectively on an issue or event. However, the article regarding my partner Lynne Roux's recent commission claim in the Paarl civil court was not only factually incorrect, it also projected the wrong image of the property industry, The inference in the article that Lynne's claim was the cause of Mr de Villiers's death is also totally inaccurate, as in fact he was already seriously ill, which was one of the reasons for selling their house. In addition Lynne had made several attempts prior to making her claim, to deal with this matter directly with Duvenage & De Villiers estate agents and not to involve his widow. The claim was eventually instituted against the estate of the late Mr de Villiers, as unfortunately the legal process of such a claim is between the estate agent and the seller, and in this case did not include the purchaser, who is an integral part of any property transaction. The impact of the court's decision for all future property transactions is extremely significant. It now means that even if an agent shows a client a property, the purchaser can simply go to another estate agent and conclude the transaction, merely by adjusting the offer price by a marginal amount. This decision will further impact on the property industry and erode the ethical standards among property consultants. Trevor Harris (Remax) The editor replies: The report on the civil court case unsuccessfully instituted by Lynne Roux was written directly from the court records and was factually correct and objective. As far as Mr de Villiers's health is concerned - the report did in fact state that the couple had retired to Rooi Els because of his heart problems. The information on Lynne Roux's attempts to settle the matter out of court was not part of the court record, and thus was not considered relevant to the report. Let's hope that the report in Paarl Post will improve awareness of the pitfalls of property transactions and will indeed play a role to prevent unscrupulous activities in the property industry. (A number of defamatory statements in Mr Harris's letter could not be published.) |

DOES anyone remember the architecturally significant Van Zyl's Building on the corner of Fabriek Street and Jan Phillips Square in Paarl? Of course not, the Municipality allowed it to be converted into a fashionable bank facade against the advice of the Aesthetics Committee. Does anyone remember the row of "garages" (Saambou Building) across the road from Costa's Café in Main Street? Of course not, the Municipality allowed this facade to be built because it represented an important corporate image. Will anybody remember the beautiful trees that used to grace the upper end of Lady Grey Street under which many people sought sanctuary from the intense Paarl heat? Of course not, the new municipality gave permission for the trees next to the former OK Bazaar building to be chopped down in order to appease another self-centred corporate image. What do all these actions have in common? Pandering to cheap ephemeral ideas has left this town the poorer. A city is made of a pastry of architecture, cobbled sidewalks, bollards, lampposts, leafy arcades, trees and benches, village squares and well-designed facades. These are familiar attributes of first class cities the world over. This is what attracts investors and makes a place enjoyable to work in. Not so in Paarl. Here the Council allows the trees to be cut down and replaced with silly little vats that cost the earth to maintain and provide shade for the ants. People need to think of the consequences before they make decisions. Concerned Paarlite |
