A BIG cultural festival is to be held in Wellington this weekend to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Bain's Kloof Pass.
The Festival will commence on Friday evening with the opening of the art exhibition on the theme "The Glories of Bain's Kloof" in the museum at 19:30, followed by a finger supper.
On Saturday at 09:00 a procession of horse-drawn vehicles, a Scottish military band, horse riders and minstrel band will move along Church and Bain Streets.
This will culminate in the opening ceremony at the Huguenot College Hall at 10:30, followed by Scottish dancing, singing and drama items.
The exhibits will reflect AG Bain's many-sided personality and his many interests.
There will also be a farmers' market at the museum as well as paleontology, photography and memorabilia exhibitions about Bain's Kloof inside the museum.
At Bovlei winery the Wellington Wine Route will present wine tasting and food on the go.
The unveiling of a plaque at Eerste Tol at 13:00 will be followed a Wellington Kontreikos (Country Cuisine) lunch in the Pass at Eerste Tol (book on 873-4604). There will also be food stalls and a fynbos exhibition.
Enjoy a historical walk through the Pass to look at bridges and drystone walls, departing from Eerste Tol at 14:00 on Saturday and Sunday ending at Tweede Tol.
There will be nature conservation walks every two hours from 09:00 on Saturday and Sunday and a fynbos hike with members of the Botanical Society at 13:00 and 15:30 on Saturday.
A guided bus tour leaves from the museum at 14:00. A two day trail ride on horseback through the pass can be booked with Katrin (082-335-8132).
There will also be a food and wine tent on the Wolseley side of the pass, with a spitbraai at the Calabash Bush Pub (023-355-1844).
On Sunday the day will start at 07:00 with the Cape Runners against Gravity (Crag) and a cycle race up to Eerste Tol organised by the Lions at 07:30.
For mountain bike enthusiasts Ontrack is organising a challenging 55 km route and a less demanding 30 km route on roads on either side of the pass. It starts at Antoniesvlei at 08:00.
There will be a strenuous Spring Flower Hike with the Mountain Club through Bastiaanskloof starting at 09:00 on the Sunday at the entrance to Steenbok Park, weather permitting (enquiries Sandra Steytler 797-8289).
A Scottish lunch will be served at Diemersfontein Estate after a church service at 10:00.
