Home-based care launched

[ Top ]

THE launch of the Partnership for Primary Health Care Programme, more specifically Home-based Care, in the Mbekweni Community Hall on Saturday, heralded a new phase for the future of primary health care in the province.

This programme is made possible by the partnership agreement between the European Commission and the South African government.

The Western Cape was one of five provinces which was identified by the Commission to participate in the Partnership for Primary Health Care Programme.

According to the provincial Department of Health the programme will be an integral part of the Health Care Plan 2010 and it will focus on community/home-based care services.

The goals and objectives that the Department has set for home-based care are to shift the emphasis of care to the beneficiaries (the community); to ensure access to care and follow-up through a functional referral system and to integrate a comprehensive care plan into the informal, non-formal and formal health system.

It also aims to empower the family/community to take care of their own health; to empower the client, the carer(s) and the community through appropriate targeted education and training; to reduce unnecessary visits and admissions to health facilities; to eliminate duplication of activities and enhance cost-effective planning and delivery of services with a pro-active approach.

The total cost of the programme in the Western Cape over the five year period, will be R80 million (R16 million per year).
