American trio at Nederburg |

 |
ONE of the most exciting trios on the musical horizon, Nobilis, will be performing at the Nederburg Homestead on Sunday 22 August at 17:00.
The programmes combine traditional romantic repertoire, the more avant-garde and original jazz arrangements with the highest levels of virtuosity and musicianship.
Acclaimed for the captivating depth and passion of their performances and innovative programming, the Trio has appeared in recitals throughout North America, Central and South America, and Europe.
Pianist Stephen Prutsman, violinist Ruggero Allifranchini and cellist Suren Bagratuni each have distinguished careers as solo, recital and chamber musicians, and have appeared individually and as a trio with major orchestras and at premier chamber music festivals throughout the United States and Europe.
Distinguished alumni of the Peabody Conservatory and the New England Conservatory, their radio and television credits include appearances on National Public Radio Performance Today, and radio programmes across the United States and abroad, including performances on Berlin Radio, Radio France and BBC London.
The programme for 22 August will include Schubert's Piano Trio No 2 in E Flat Major, Suite from The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky and arrangements of Gypsy and Jazz numbers.

Onsterflike liefde in Ou Meulteater |

'DRACULA - Love stronger than Death' word van 20 Augustus tot 4 September in die Ou Meulteater in die Paarl opgevoer.
'n Magtige kryger - Prins Vlad, wat die kruis beskerm het om die kerk teen alle vyande te beskerm - keer terug van die Turkse gevegsfront om sy geliefde dood te vind aan haar eie hand weens misleiding deur sy vyande.
Onvraaglike pyn en woede ly die jong prins daartoe om wraak te neem vir haar dood. Hy staan op uit die dode as 'n gevalle engel.
Vervloek om deur die eeue te swerf, oorleef hy op lewende bloed. Vir altyd verdoem om so te doen, vind hy weer sy ware liefde - vier honderd jaar later in die laat negentiende eeuse Londen.
Die stuk is aangepas deur en onder regie van Zetti van den Heuvel. Met André Strydom, Anuschka Schenke, Suzanne Nel, Ettienne Snyman, Jerome van den Heuvel, Eddie Harley, Pieter Creus, Rohann Wessels, Alicia Louw, Odette Fourie, Jeanine Terblanche en Anton Walters.
'n Liefdadigheidsaand word op 18 Augustus gehou. Kaartjies vir die gala-aand op 20 Augustus kos R60 per persoon en sluit 'n ligte maaltyd en wyn in.

Afrikaansweek hét nog asem |

DRAMA, kabaret, boekepret, musiek, voorlesings, uitstallings en nog veel meer is wat jy tydens die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum se Afrikaansweek tot Sondag in die Paarl kan geniet.
Die museum bied self vyf produksies aan - die Alles in Afrikaans musiekfees op Taaldag, 14 Augustus, 'n dansdrama "Raka", 'n tienertoneelstuk Vrydagmiddag, asook "Boekepret" by skole in Paarl-Oos, in samewerking met Human & Rousseau.
* Raka. Die epos Raka word vanmiddag om 15:00 by Laerskool Gimnasium opgevoer deur 'n groep leerders van Noorder-Paarl Sekondêr.
Die epiese gedig van NP van Wyk Louw, wat dikwels vir graad elf en twaalf voorgeskryf word, sal deur middel van fisieke teater en musiek op die verhoog uitgebeeld word. Kaartjies by die Taalmuseum.
* Kabaret: Petronel Baard, De Oude Paarl Hotel (872-1002).
* 'n Roos is 'n roos is 'n roos... is 'n .tienertoneelstuk, môremiddag 15:00 by die Taalmuseum aangebied deur Museum Muse, die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum se eie dramagroep bestaande uit plaaslike hoërskoolleerders onder leiding van Marie Hammann.
Dis 'n opwindende program ter viering van Taaldag met woordeboeke, 'n ontdekking van die woord "roos" dmv gedigte van AG Visser, FW Reitz, NP van Wyk Louw en Lucas Maree - alles rondom die sinnebeeld van die roos - skoonheid, volmaaktheid, verganklikheid, roos-idiome, en natuurlik liefde.
Kaartjies R5 (volwassenes R10) beskikbaar by die Taalmuseum, of skakel 872-3441.
* Maleierkoor: De Kostinrichting, 871-1353.
* Alles in Afrikaans musiekfees. Die gewilde sanger Dozi en sy groep tree Saterdag in die Carel Redelinghuys Sentrum, Hoërskool Gimnasium op.
Die fees is van 18:00 tot 22:00. Kaartjies kos R60 by die Taalmuseum.
Die voorprogram bevat ook 'n paar bekende name. Stef Kruger, die skrywer van Dozi se Afrikaanse liedjies wat al self ook twee suksesvolle albums agter sy naam het, sal solo optree.
* Uitstallings. Daar is verskeie uitstallings te sien.
By die museum is die staande uitstalling, Afrikaans 'n reënboogtaal, en by die Afrikaanse Taalmonument is daar 'n uistalling oor die argitektuur van die monument.
Kunswerke van Cato Jamneck is by Simonsvlei Kelder te sien en in die historium van die taalmuseum is daar 'n uitstalling van David Botha.

Donkie skryf liedjies vir Arikaansweek |

AMEEN LEVY, wat Saterdagaand in die voorprogram van Dozi se opvoering by Hoërskool Gimnasium optree, het 'n spesiale liedjie geskryf vir dié geleentheid.
Levy en sy orkes, Fireball, sal die aand die nuwe liedjie, 'Afrikaans is daam 'n lekker taal, né', uitvoer,
"Ek beskou die aand as 'n groot uitdaging en ek is trots om deel te wees van die breër Afrikaanse gemeenskap," het Levy gesê.
"Veertien jaar se harde werk begin nou eers vrugte afwerp, want baie deure is besig om vir my oop te gaan."
Levy oorweeg dit om die liedjie ook op sy nuwe CD te sit, wat volgende jaar in Nederland vrygestel gaan word.
Saterdagaand se program begin om 18:00 in die Carel Redelinghuys-saal by Gimnasium. Kaartjies is beskikbaar by die Taalmuseum, 872-3441. |

Desiré Samaai in star-studded gala |

FORMER Paarlite Desiré Samaai and her husband, Jonathan Ollivier of Northern Ballet Theatre in the UK, will participate in the 70th Anniversary gala of Cape Town City Ballet.
The company will present two show-stopping performances at the Artscape Opera House on 21 and 22 August, featuring highlights from the company's repertoire over the past seventy years.
For Jonathan and Desiré their participation in the galas has special meaning, considering that their partnership began in Cape Town four years ago.
Desiré made her debut opposite Andrew Warth, former dancer and now publicist to the Cape Town City Ballet, in David Poole's Coppelia at the Artscape Opera House in June 1993.
Both Desiré and Jonathan were recently nominated for the prestigious National Dance Awards in London.
Desiré continues to command the admiration of audiences and critics alike whilst Jonathan is now recognised as one of Britain's leading male dancers.
Other well-known guest stars are Thomas Edur and Agnes Oaks from the English National Ballet. Earlier this year, Thomas and Agnes were awarded the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
Thomas and Agnes will perform the bravura Don Quixote pas de deux as well as Impromptu, a pas de deux written especially for them by the English choreographer, Derek Dean.
Desiré and Jonathan will dance the pas de deux from Romeo & Juliette as well as a second pas de deux from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

THE Duke of Cornwall Singers, a dynamic and unconventional male voice choir from St Stithians College in Johannesburg, will be at the Barnyard Theatre near Franschhoek on Friday 20 August.
The Dukes, who have won international acclaim with previous national and international tours, will visit the region over a ten day period, performing at schools, community groups and theatres.
The choir, who perform mainly jazz and swing to full band accompaniment, also perform African traditionals, comedy skits and feature a djembe ensemble in a mutli-talented, dynamic performance.
There are also local groups performing on the evening: Born to Sing from Bridge House School, Groendal Secondary School and La Rochelle Girls' High.

THE second semester of the La Motte Concert Programme starts on Saturday 28 August with pianist Gustavo Romero playing works by Bach-Liszt, Schubert, Medtner and Chopin.
* On 18 September Anmari van der Westhuizen (cello) and Elna van der Merwe (piano) present a programme of works by Arvo Pärt and Pfitzner and a number of Mendelssohn variations.
* The Potch Trio with Albie van Schalkwyk (piano), Piet Koornhof (violin) en Human Coetzee (cello) are there on 2 October with Mendelssohn's sonata for strings in F Major, cello sonata in D Major and piano trio in C Minor.
* On 6 November Carlo Guaitoli (piano) plays a variety of works by Chopin, three preludes by Piazzolla and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue".
* Hanneli Rupert and Friends present their Christmas concert with singing and narration on 26 & 27 November.

DIE Vriende van Afrikaans op Wellington bied op Donderdag 19 Augustus om 19:30 in die CP van der Merwe-saal 'n talent-aand aan onder die opskrif "Talent in Afrikaans".
Benewens leerders wat optree (onder meer groepdanse op Afrikaanse musiek deur Bergrivier Hoër), neem studente van die Technikon-kampus deel met groepspraak en sang.
Sangers soos Annemie Rademeyer, De Wet Hugo, Getha Grobler, Karin Kotze, Louis Potgieter, Theo Venter, Sarel Eloff, Newton Theron, die klopsegroep Young Gold Dollars en André Victor se Boeremusiek-orkes is ook op die program.
