Boschendal will be 'gift' to nation

[ Top ]

THE new owners of the historic Boschendal homestead and the 2 240 hectare Rhodes Fruit Farms (which have at least five historic homes) have announced that Boschendal and its related werf will be part of a gift to the nation.

The Boschendal homestead and werf were restored and developed by the former owners, Anglo-American, to become a premier tourist facility.

GIFT. The historic manor house and werf at Boschendal, including its treasure of art and furniture, is to become part of the national heritage, according to the new owners.

garden all now house tourist-related facilities, the largest of which is the 120-seater restaurant in the former wine cellar.

Clive Venning, Chief Executive of the new residential development company, said that it is "entirely appropriate" that this homestead and its attractive surroundings should belong to the nation.

Once the stringent rezoning requirements have been met to the Minister's satisfaction, he hopes to develop farmyard villages and a 300 unit retirement village on the Boschendal estate,

"Boschendal," he said, "is today the most frequently visited of all the historic Cape Dutch homesteads - it has over 100,000 visitors per annum, of which about one-third actually visit the homestead itself. It is well known worldwide and is very much part of our South African heritage."

The restoration, said Venning, was carried out by Anglo-American in the 1970's with a thoroughness and authenticity seldom seen before on this type of work.

The architect Gawie Fagan and his wife Gwen undertook extensive research in the Cape Archives to ensure that the restored house was true to an original building erected in 1812.

The architect Dirk Visser and the historian Gwen Mills played important roles in sourcing these authentic furniture and artworks – even to the point of ordering from Holland an ornate metal birdcage of the kind invariably found in 18th Century Cape homesteads.

"Some of the furniture and paintings," said Marianne Gertenbach, the homestead's curator, "are truly magnificent - among the best of their kind to be found anywhere in the world.

The "vehicle" through which Boschendal will become a national asset, is the Rhodes National Heritage Trust, which was founded in 1996 by Anglo-American to acquire and borrow furniture and artworks for the homestead. The trust will now also ensure that the homestead is maintained in perpetuity.

This trust will retain control of the homestead and is fortunately sufficiently well endowed to ensure that, along with the entrance fees collected, the preservation of the historic home will not lack for funds.

"South Africa can, therefore, be grateful that the new development team at Boschendal is playing their part in keeping alive a tradition that is cultural and gracious – qualities our 21st Century badly needs," says Venning.

The house, dating from 1812, was built by Paul de Villiers, a descendant of Abraham de Villiers, who bought the farm in 1715.

Certification for vines

VITITEC, the plant improvement division of KWV, has been awarded the first ever South African ISO certification for plant improvement from the SABS.

At the award ceremony in Paarl, SABS divisional manager Steve Lashmer commended Vititec for its hard work in achieving ISO 9001:2000.

According to Nico Spreeth, manager Vititec, the certification provides their clients with full assurance about Vititec plant material in terms of quality, safety and reliability.

A full audit was done by the SABS and included the laboratory and greenhouses at Picardi in Paarl, where the best available viticulturally and oenologically selected clonal material is being developed.

More than half a million organizations in more than 60 countries are currently implementing ISO 9000 which provides a framework for quality management.

Groot planne vir Windmeul

[ Top ]
