FOUR local students will take part in the Western Cape provincial leg of the 2002 Model United Nations General Assembly Debating Competition for high schools, to take place in Cape Town at the provincial legislature on Saturday.

They are Maréthe Hurferth and Megan Meyer of La Rochelle High, who have joined up with Charleston Hill High students Willem Cloete and Charlton Brown for the debate, which could see them travelling to the United Nations in March. A total of 68 students will take part.

The competition - a joint initiative between South African Breweries, Education Africa and the Department of Education - has been run successfully provincially and nationally for five years.

The winning team and one representative from each province, to make up a team of 12, will be selected to travel to the United States in March to compete in an international debating contest against teams from around the world.

On Saturday the teams will debate issues surrounding the affordability and accessibility of anti-retroviral drugs in Africa.
