Support for victims of violence

[ Top ]

THANK YOU for listening to the voices of women who hurt, said Prof Juliana Smith, expressing her gratitude to Virginia Petersen, Superintendent-general of the Department of Social Services, in Paarl last week.

She spoke at the launch of the partnership between the Department and the Athlone House of Strength (AHOS) in Paarl to establish a victim support centre.

The idea for a 'House of Strength' began in 1999 when Pat Martin was instrumental in raising awareness of the plight of abused children and women. She invited two members each from the five churches constituting the Athlone

AGREEMENT. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed recently between the Department of Social Services, the Athlone Institute Trust and its Athlone House of Strength (AHOS). Here are Pat Martin (Chairperson, AHOS), Rev Abe Maart (Chairperson, Athlone Trust) and Virginia Petersen (Superintendent General of the Department) signing the documents.

Trust and the AHOS committee was established.

Their vision was communicated to the Athlone Trust who pledged support for this initiative.

AHOS's mission is to provide a stable, caring and safe environment for abandoned, abused and neglected children and women.

From current statistics on violence against women, one in four women is in an abusive relationship, while every 23 seconds a woman is raped and every four days a woman is murdered by her partner.

The agreement signed by AHOS, the Athlone Institute Trust and the Department of Social Welfare commits the partners to respond to the need in the communities in the Paarl district by developing a new intervention, termed a One Stop Victim Support Centre.

The Department will provide a project reference team, bring all relevant partners into the process, provide start-up funding as well as technical and other expertise.

Athlone Trust will provide seed funds to establish the centre, participate in the reference team.

The AHOS committee will participate in the design, development, monitoring and evaluation of the centre.

They will also be responsible for managing the centre and ensuring that the board of management equips itself with all the necessary skills and expertise.

Pat Martin can be contacted at 862-2362.

[ Top ]
