Jazz at Franschhoek Festival

[ Top ]

THE sunny squares at Bridge House School, the host of the Franschhoek Festival from 21 to 23 March, will be bulging with culinary delights and top jazz musicians.

Festival-goers will be treated to fabulous fare prepared by some of the country's top chefs, wines from the valley's award-winning wine estates accompanied by the funky sounds of South Africa's best jazz bands.

Virtual Jazz Reality and Ivan Mazuze, two of Cape Town's most popular jazz outfits, will share the stage with Tina Schouw and the Winston Mankunku band. In partnership with P4 Radio, there will be non-stop jazz throughout the weekend.

Exhibitors will demonstrate the latest trends in food preparation and style and boutique foodies will have gastronomic delights to taste.

It's a day out for the whole family. In keeping with Bridge House School's education philosophy of experiential learning, the kids' area is an event in itself, making the choice between face painting, farm animals, pony rides, puppet shows and games even more difficult.

Serious wine buyers can stock their cellars with wine from the Franschhoek Valley at cellar-door prices and there is free wine tasting.

Legend Winston Mankunku, one of South Africa's most respected tenor saxophone players evokes powerful images with his township jazz. He has been a beacon for trends and style in the jazz genre and has nurtured a following over three decades.

Folk stalwart Tina Schouw returns to jazz for the festival after weaving a tapestry of music and melodies over two decades and many international appearances.

Mozambique saxophonist Ivan Mazuze is a new breed of jazz musician. A UCT graduate, he already has his own band, writes much of his own material and is making waves in the local music industry.

The ever-popular UCT big band will share the stage with well-known Cape jazz greats.

Entry is R65 per person or a weekend ticket for R110 gives you entry the entire weekend from 12:00 until 21:00 on Friday and Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday.

For tickets contact Catherine Langley on 874-1505 or email info@harvestfestival.co.za. Booking also at Computicket.

THE Western Cape Schools' Festival takes place at the Artscape Theatre Centre on Monday and Tuesday.

Organised by the Grahamstown Foundation Arts' Education Department, over 900 Grade 11 learners are expected to attend what promises to be a memorable occasion.

Festival highlights this year include the production Rustlers, directed by Roy Sargeant and starring Diane Wilson, Dumisane Mbebe, Bo Peterson and Warren McAslen. It is currently running at the Artscape Theatre and is described as being a heart-warming piece, bubbling with wit and humour.

They also have Nongqawuse: The Truth Commission performed by the Community Arts Project of Cape Town which tells the story of Nongqawuse and the cattle killings of 1865 through the medium of physical theatre, Hip-Hop music and dance.

Alan Committie provides his unique brand of comedy with his show Titanic while Matthew Ribnick produces hilarious, whacky characters in his performance of The Chilli Boy.

Without further Adieu is the brilliant new show from The Remix Theatre Company, once again proving how successful integrated theatre can be.

In conjunction with the shows, delegates have the opportunity of learning new skills and developing their creativity in a range of interactive workshops.

They will also be entertained by the Theatresports team and the UCT Drama Department's performance lectures on King Lear and Dance with a Poor Man's Daughter.
