Students take the initiative

Bridge House School has developed a leadership programme that requires serving before leadership.

"The traditional prefect and rugby captain leadership model has excluded many children over the years, who could have gone on to be great leaders and great servants", said Chris Storey, one of the driving forces behind a new leadership programme developed at Bridge House School in Franschhoek.

Chris believes that leadership incorporates initiative, making things happen, taking risks, and inspiring others to be more.

The programme is based on self-selection and the child has to fulfil four criteria set out in the programme: to achieve a physical activity or sport, organise an event learn a new skill or initiate a service programme.

"The cornerstone of all the projects is taking the initiative to make things happen," said Storey.

"Our pupils got involved in some interesting projects," said Storey. One pupil was part of a drama programme that involved teaching drama skills in disadvantaged areas.

"One of the most interesting projects in the self-development category was a child that learned to foal down mares and the delivery of a foal was captured on digital camera.

"It is tailor-made for each pupil's needs and so for one pupil, his objective was just to take a wicket in cricket, while for another the objective was selection into the Boland side.

"Two organisational development projects stand out for me: one was a trout fishing expedition completely organised by a pupil who invited his father and two friends.

"The other was a street party in Stellenbosch - a 13-year-old girl arranged to have the street closed and organised the party."

Storey added that there is no prize or award, but the programme is run on a consultative basis so that the goals and challenges that are set are realistic and appropriate for each individual.

Some of the teachers involved in the programme will be available at the Franschhoek Festival (21-23 March), for any parents keen to discuss this unique leadership programme.
