complex relationship between their work bringing together for the first time in a dedicated exhibition the work of two uniquely talented craftspeople united by blood and a passionate love of ceramics.

David graduated from the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg with an honours degree in Fine Arts in 1974.

He and his wife Michelle established Caversham Mill Pottery in the Natal Midlands and were instrumental in the formation of the Midlands Meander in the 1980's.

The studio was entirely washed away by a flood in 1987 and the family moved to Norfolk in England. The Particular Pottery was set up in 1988 in an old Particular Baptist Chapel, in the south Norfolk village of Kenninghall.

There, David became involved with the local Suffolk Craft Society, becoming Vice Chairman, and also Chairman of the Members Advisory Committee of the Craft Potters Association in London.

Having returned home to South Africa in 1998, the Studio and Gallery are now found in The Roubaix House Gallery; a large restored Cape Dutch Victorian House in the heart of Franschhoek.

Sarah graduated from the Norwich School of Art and Design with a degree in Fine Art Sculpture in 2001.

On her return to South Africa she began to move away from sculpture and to work increasingly in the field of ceramics.

In 2002 she was awarded the title of APSA's best New Signature in the Western Cape and has since exhibited regularly across South Africa.

Gloria and big band perform

[ Top ]

TWO of the biggest names in local jazz, bandleader Mike Campbell and vocalist Gloria Bosman, will join forces on stage at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre on Saturday.

The combination of Gloria Bosman with the Mike Campbell Big Band has been a great success in the past, and Campbell's arrangements of tunes from her recent CD's have brought the big band idiom into some of the most exciting indigenous music around.

Gloria is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and versatile singers in the country today, and the kind of artist that can front a big band and take it to another level.

The Oude Libertas programme will give listeners an exciting mix of jazz and contemporary music, ranging from Ellington and Basie to a funk version of John Lennon's Imagine and some Latin fusion from Bob Mintzer, as well as originals from the collaboration of Mike Campbell and Gloria Bosman.

Gloria has sung with a myriad artists, all of whom represent the African Jazz Renaissance, of which she is a huge part. She has shared the stage with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, James Philips, Victor Masondo and Hugh Masekela, to name but a few.

She also had the honour of singing for both outgoing and incoming presidents when she sang for Thabo Mbeki at his Christmas dinner and for Nelson Mandela at his 80th birthday celebrations at Gallagher Estate.

Mike Campbell is a big band director of international renown, having composed and arranged for bands all over the world, particularly in the United States and Australia. Mike is Head of  Jazz Studies and Associate Professor in the South African College of Music at UCT.

The MC Big Band is comprised of Cape Town's top jazz musicians, including Kevin Gibson (drums), Shannon Mowday (alto sax), Willy Haubrich (trombone), Vaughn Fransch (trumpet), and many others well-known on the local jazz scene. There is also a strong presence of young players representing the new wave of talent coming out of the jazz programme at UCT,

Mamavox at Oude Libertas

[ Top ]

IMAGINE this potent mix, if you can: take the talents of four of Cape Town's best young female j azz vocalists - Amanda Tiffin, Lisa Bauer, Monique Hellenberg and Mimi Ntenjwa.

Add some saucy jazz tunes as well as funky, hip-hop-'n-happening versions of recent popular hits and other great arrangements. What you get is almost too hot to handle: the four ladies call themselves Mamavox, and they will be performing live at Oude Libertas Amphitheatre tomorrow.

Mamavox is an all-female jazz vocal ensemble, performing a mixture of jazz and popular songs, some of which are sung a capella, the rest accompanied by a jazz trio.

You can expect to here renditions of Miriam Makeba's classics, Seal's Kiss From A Rose, Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers, an a capella version of Norah Jones' Don't Know Why, some more straight ahead jazz tunes as well as funky, hip-hop-'n-happening versions of recent popular hits.
