I AM extremely concerned about the indiscriminate felling of trees in the area above Enslin Street in Paarl.
This area has been popular with local walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders, bird watchers as well as being a pleasant walk along the shady tree-lined path for tourists who stay in the many nearby guest-houses as well as the Grande Roche.
An ill equipped group are felling everything they encounter above the footpath, both fullgrown pines as well as many saplings and any other vegetation in their way. This is leaving the area looking like a First World War battlefield.
The operation is not well run and what used to be a peaceful area of natural beauty has become a messy industrial site.
I am aware of the initiative to rid our environment of so-called alien vegetation, but wonder of trees that were probably growing in the Paarl area before any of our grandfathers where born are truly alien.
Will the next target be our wonderful oak trees which are a tourist drawcard throughout the Western Cape?
Why not remove the Black Wattle and Port Jackson, which is grow ing all over the Nature Reserve area?
Why not also remove the poplar trees that are choking the gully just north of the Grande Roche property above the hotel?
I would like to be informed of the objectives of this operation and would like to see the cost benefits which have seen it approved by the municipality.
Will the area be replanted with local species? Will the inevitable and rapid spread of Port Jackson and Black Wattle be controlled?
I would also like to see the environmental impact report which I presume is required before such an area is devastated like this one.
If there is no environmental impact assessment I would like to know why this has not been done.
