TOUGH TIMES. Canoeists who yesterday took to the water for this year's Berg River Canoe Marathon had trouble early on with the shallow river on the first of this four day event.

STEADY NOW. The Berg River Canoe Marathon kicked off on a very low Berg River on Wednesday, with many canoeists getting stuck on rocks just below the Market Street Bridge in Paarl. The favourite Hank McGregor was first off, with Jacques Theron and Graeme Solomons hot on his heels. Theron won the first leg to Zonquasdrift.
