Youth - Jeug

PET. Hannah Lohry would love to take Billy the eight-year-old African iguana home to join her menagerie of weird and wonderful pets. But Billy will have to stay at his home at Butterfly World at Klapmuts. His wife, Rosie, is also there, and their keepers have noticed that they have become very "attentive" of late. Who knows, one of these days there might by a little Billy for Hannah.

South African at heart

LIV Södahl is a 19-year-old Swedish outreach worker doing her bit for Africa, and more specifically, in Paarl.

She arrived in South Africa in September for the start of her ten month visit to rediscover her African roots.

After five months working for the Reach Christian organisation in KwaZulu Natal, she moved to Paarl and joined Koinonia Community Centre.

She volunteered for this experience, because she feels that South Africa is in her blood.

LOVE THIS PLACE. Liv Södahl does not want to go back home to Sweden.

Liv was born in Port Elizabeth and her parents moved to Sweden when she was one year old.

Eventually they settled down in a small town just outside of Gothenburg, called Alingsas.

According to Liv, Paarl is one of the most beautiful places she has ever seen.

"I've been up Paarl Rock. It is very beautiful and extremely romantic.

"I also visited the Taalmonument, which was quite interesting. Closer to Wellington, I visited the Bovlei vineyards. Today I am going to see Madiba House," says Liv.

She finds South Africa very different from Sweden. She finds it colder here.

"I've never worn so many clothes in my life whilst indoors. In Sweden the temperature sometimes goes down to minus 20 degrees Celcius, but it is much warmer inside our houses due to the central heating."

Paarl is an exciting place and she enjoyed going out here with her friends.

"One of the things I will miss the most about Paarl, and South Africa, is the dancing. I really enjoy Kwaito and Kwêla music. It has a wonderful beat."

The people she stayed with helped her to drastically improve her Afrikaans.

If a person talks slowly she can understand, and she can even speak it a little.

She is flying home in three days' time, but wishes she could stay longer

Big Brother Big Sister recruiting new members

BIG Brothers Big Sisters of South Africa (BBBSSA) is a non-profit organisation affiliated to Big Brothers Big Sisters International, which operates in 36 countries around the globe.

They facilitate one-to-one mentoring relationships with children who need a caring adult friend/volunteer.

Difficult life conditions often deprive children of a positive role model, which is, however, essential for the self-realisation of everyone.

"By matching an underprivileged child with a responsible adult, the child benefits from the constructive influence of his/her mentor.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Africa was established three years ago and are working hard in order to make a difference in our country little by little.

Because they strongly believe in the idea that young people represent the future, "it is essential to give them every opportunity to realize their potential.

"One will be surprised to note that as little as one hour a week  is enough to transform a child's life in a simple, yet powerful way."

A BBBSSA evaluation, conducted by the Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town, has shown that matched children have an increase in communication skills and academic performance and that they are less likely to do risky things and to engage in fights.

The match is based on the needs of the child and the strengths of the adult.

The case managers identify certain goals for the development of the child, such as increase in self-confidence or improvement of academic performance, which structure the time they spend together.

To prepare the mentors, they complete training sessions about issues such as Relationship Building, Self-esteem Development and Values Clarification prior to their introduction to the child."

You can contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Africa at 447-2227 or makeadifference@bbbssa.org.za.

Of dalk nie?

As ek alleen by die huis is, skets ek graag. Verder besoek ek my familielede in Mbekweni en New Rest," vertel hy.

Verder besoek ek gereeld my ouma en tannie in Vanwyksvlei."

"Ek sou darem graag wou Krugerwildtuin toe gaan.

"Playstation 2 speletjies hou my ook besig," sê Naomi.

"Wanneer ek nie werk nie kuier ek by my meisie of saam met my vriende.
