TOUGH TIMES. Canoeists who yesterday took to the water for this year's Berg River Canoe Marathon had trouble early on with the shallow river.  McGregor who clocked a time of 23 minutes 2,08 seconds in Tuesday's timetrial, started in pole position but Jacques Theron crossed the finish line first at Zonquasdrift yesterday in a time of 5:11:54. McGregor came in second some three minutes later in 5:15:35.

Sundowns take title

[ Top ]

LOCAL soccer team Mbekweni Sundowns were crowned the national amateur club champions when they won the Castle League play-offs in Phalaborwa on Saturday.

The team's trip nearly ended in tragedy however, when their bus burst into flames late Sunday morning on their way back to Paarl.

"The accelerator cable got stuck at Drie Susters. The driver informed us that he couldn't stop the bus as we were heading towards a stop street at a T-junction," Sundowns coach, Robert Meyer, said on Tuesday.

"You could hear something was wrong as the engine was revving very high.

"We drove straight over the stop street, down a small embankment and into the field of a farm. That's when the bus caught fire," says Meyer.

No one was injured, but Meyer as well as his assistant coach, and the team captain, Siphelo Skafu, lost all their clothes.

The biggest loss however was some of the players' medals and the big trophy they won in Phalaborwa.

"We would have arrived in Mbekweni around 16:00 on Sunday and would have driven around the neighbourhood bragging with our trophy. But now all that is spoilt," Meyer said.

The team however had better luck on the field.

Sundowns, the SAFA Western Province winners from the Paarl Football District, beat Soweto United 2-0 in the finals of the Castle League.

Luvuyo Jalamba and Jongikhaya Tekani scored in the 70th and 77th minute respectively for the newly crowned kings of the development league.

Sundowns were unbeaten on their way to the finals, dominating Tiger Chiefs (3-1), KwaMashu All Stars (1-0) and Breidbach Sporting (4-0).

The Paarl team now also ensured their promotion to the Vodacom league and will be campaigning in the second division next season.

The success of Sundowns comes shortly after another Cape teams, Town Roses from Guguletu Football District, won the national Sanlam League Championship in Nelspruit when they beat Soweto All Stars 8-0.

"With the elimination of corrupt referees through Operation Dribble, Western Province will begin to dominate national competitions like we did a few years ago," says Bienie Alexander, spokesperson for SAFA WP.

"In 2000, we made a clean sweep and won every single competition at SAFA.

"However, in the last few years, strange refereeing decisions have prevented our clubs and players from proving that SAFA Western Province is the best footballing region in the country."

Young Peoples verneder met groot pak slae

[ Top ]

Gardens rank Riverstones toe

[ Top ]

Gardens speel Saterdag weg teen Hamediehs. Die bus vertrek om 12:00.

Kavaliers klop Griffons sukkel-sukkel

[ Top ]

Wellington oorheers steeds

[ Top ]

Footballer kicked in head

[ Top ]

AMIDST a vicious attack on one of their players the first team of Paarl Soccer Club still managed to thrash Queenspark 5-0 at the Boy Louw fields on Saturday.

Wade Anderson (26), midfielder of Paarl, was tripped by his Queenspark counterpart and then kicked in the head after falling to the ground.

Anderson was immediately unconscious after suffering the blow, sustaining injuries to his neck, a concussion and a cut tongue.

He was fitted with a neckbrace, helped off the field and taken to hospital.

"I ran past him on my way to the right side of the field where their goalkeeper had kicked the ball.

"I must have stepped on his toe by mistake because he tripped me and then apparently kicked my head," said Anderson on Monday.

"According to people next to the field my head shook vigoroursly after the kick which explains the intense pain in my neck," Anderson said, adding that he will be out of action for at least four weeks.

After receiving a red card and being sent off, the Queenspark player gave Anderson's stepping on his new boots as reason for the attack .

"It was ghastly. Soccer is an aggressive and hard game but it is the first time I have seen a player outright attack another on the field," said Lindsay van der Bergh, coach of Paarl Soccer Club.

"After the match the referee said to some of the players that he was specifically sent by the Union to adjudicate the match in Paarl due to previous occurences of dirty play by the Queenspark club," Anderson said.

Paarl Soccer Club, the referee and the medic who treated Anderson on the field have filed reports with the Tygerberg Soccer Union.

Although the match was played in a tense, aggressive atmosphere from the start, tempers calmed after the incident happened.

The home team led by 2-0 at this stage and found the back of the net three more times to the dismay of the visitors.

Paarl's goals were scored by striker Dwayne de Waal (2), midfielder James Philander (2) and right back Harvin Cupido.

The second team also came away the winners after Kelvin McKenzie, Uyshin Baadjies and Randy Abrahams sought out the back of the net.

Paarl, who finished at the top of the log in the second division of the Cape Town Tygerberg League, play their third match of the second round against Westend in Athlone on Saturday.

Albions troef Rangers

[ Top ]
