DIE Wêreldkampioenskappe vir Uitvoerende Kunste vind jaarliks in Los Angeles plaas en hoewel plaaslike kunstenaars uitstekend vaar, is die koste bo die meeste se vuurmaakplek.

Andrew Strauss van La Musique Kunsteskool in die Paarl, wat ook die Wes-Kaapse direkteur van die organisasie is, sê die junior afdeling, vir kunstenaars onder 15 jaar, word vanjaar die eerste keer in Suid-Afrika aangebied en wel in Durban.

Die Wes-Kaapse uitdunne sal van 27 April tot 4 Mei in die Paarl aangebied word en inskrywings kan nou reeds gedoen word.

Die inskrywingsgeld is R100 per afdeling, wat 'n deelnemer in staat stel om aan vier style deel te neem. Die sluitingsdatum is 31 Januarie. Kontak Andrew by 872-6651.

INTERVIEWS and auditions for the new course of PROmpt (Professional Music, Performance and Technology) will take place from Monday.

The PROmpt Music Industry training programme was launched at Athlone Technical College in July 2001. It is the only fully comprehensive training for the contemporary music industry in South Africa.

Trainees are accepted according to these rules: Do they show potential? If so, when they have completed the course, will they be able to make a worthwhile career in the music industry?

Applicants need to show a huge amount of determination to succeed.

PROmpt and their trainees have already boasted a number of successes. They composed all 19 songs for their first end-of-year presentation in 2001.

Girl vocalists stole the show at last year's Jazzathon Ladies Day and gave stunning performances at the opening of the last two Women of the World Festivals.

They provided entertainment at the last two City Council Small Business Celebrations and gave nine performances during the Cape Town Festival.

Commercials for Standard Bank were written and recorded.

'Footprints on our Minds' was specially written for Archbishop Emiritus Tutu and performed at the ceremony at the University of the Western Cape, where he was given an honorary doctorate.

During 2002 PROmpt trained around 80 young people. Staff wrote about 700 pages of new coursework on all subjects. The curriculum had to be changed several times as improvements were made.

The coursework will change in future to keep up with developments and new inventions in the music industry.

Every qualification contains a thorough grounding of music and the industry to prepare young people for work in many different areas of the business.

Acceptance for the course is getting more difficult at each intake.

Die Woordfees wat een van die yskoelste kunstefeeste in die Wes-Kaap is, word weer aangebied van 7 tot 9 Maart op Stellenbosch.

Saam met die Woordfees bied die Wes-Kaapse Regering nou ook 'n Jeugfees aan.

Die doel van hierdie Jeugfees, waarvan die bandkompetisie deel is, is om uit te vind waar al die Karen Zoids, die Jamariquas, die Bob Marleys en die Jamiroquai van môre wegkruip.

Maak nie saak of jy kwaito gooi, of rock of blues, of funk of hip-hop met 'n ossewawiel-draaitafel nie - kom wys jou ding!

Hulle soek drie oorspronklike songs in enige van die amptelike tale van die Wes-Kaap. Verder moet jy volgende jaar in die hoërskool wees (Gr 8-12).
