Arts - Kunste

Enter Bainskloof art exhibition

[ Top ]

wbain1ARTISTS from all over have an opportunity to participate in an art exhibition from 12 to 24 September entitled "The Glories of Bain's Kloof".

It will be part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Bain's Kloof Pass, a national monument, in September 1853 in Wellington.

Artists are invited to submit paintings, drawings, photographic prints or etchings for this exhibition.

In interpreting the theme "The Glories of Bain's Kloof", a liberal interpretation of related concepts, which may reflect the landscape, mountains, flora, fauna, geology and history of the area between the two entrances of the Pass (Darling Bridge to Antoniesvlei) are suggested.

The venue will be the Wellington Museum. Artists submitting works are not confined to residents of the Berg River Valley only.

Commission charges on sales (works may be sold) will be 20% and a nominal charge to cover expenses of R10 per submission will be levied.

Works should be mounted or framed and be within the size range A4 (210 x 300m) to A1 (600 x 840mm), with framed pictures ready for hanging (with two fish-eye screws in the back).

Each artist is allowed to submit up to six works, of which only three will be selected for hanging.

A panel of independent art evaluators will select the works for display.

It has been suggested that unsold works be auctioned off at a concluding function at the Museum, at eventide on Heritage Day, 24 September, if artists are amenable to the idea.

For practical reasons scholars up to and including Grade 12 are excluded, but all adults, college and university students are more than welcome to participate.

Enquiries to Leigh-Anne Wolfaardt (873-5978/082-963-9153) and Trevor Cleevely (072-728-0184).

Prospective exhibitors should complete an application form as early as possible, obtainable for the Wellington Tourism Bureau (873-4604), to assist with planning this event, particularly in the light of the limits on available hanging space.

Forms must be posted to 3 Cillié Street, Wellington 7655 or handed in at the Tourism Bureau.

Kabaret in Afrikaans

[ Top ]

Toegang (R50) sluit verversings in. Bespreek by Liesl, 872-3441.

The sound of music for orphans

[ Top ]

A GROUP of chorists from the south of France are visiting South Africa to collaborate with several local choirs in a concert to raise funds in support of the Ikhwezi Aids Sponsorship Programme.

Ikhwezi (Morning Star in Xhosa) currently aids 28 orphaned children, nine of which are HIV positive. Each child receives R450 per month, while 105 orphans urgently await assistance.

The concert takes place on Thursday 24 April at the Mbekweni Community Hall at 19:30. Tickets are R10 (children R5). For tickets, contact Shahida or Thamie on 868-1707 or 868-0842.

Choirs participating in the concert include the Mighty Joyous Singers, Mbekweni Black Bafanas and the Frank Pietersen Music School.

Since the tour has been sponsored by a French wine-maker, songs on the program include a homage to wine.

Several African songs, sure to lift the roof with all the voices singing in unison, will also be sung.
