THE annual Library Week takes place this week. The slogan for this year's campaign is Be a Bhuki buddy!
During this period public libraries offer numerous special competitions, exhibitions and activities to local communities to make them aware of the services rendered by public libraries and the benefits arising from access to all the information in a library.
On Saturday the Drakenstein Library in Paulus Street, Paarl East, is presenting a 6,5 km Walk & Talk at 08:00 sharp. The entry fee is R5 (pupils R2). All walkers will receive a library cap at the start of the race. Entry forms are available at the library.
This year's campaign is aimed specifically at young library users to inspire the primary school child to realise the value and use of books.
The youngsters will be shown that books are good friends as they are available at the nearest library when needed; they assist with homework and school projects; they are never angry or moody (but can help to improve your mood!).
Annually about 250 000 items are added to the stock of Library Services to be utilised free of charge by public library users throughout the Western Cape Province.
The total stock amounts to more than five million items. The annual circulation figure of more than 21 million is indicative of the popularity of the stock made up of books, newspapers, magazines, CD's and videos.
In public libraries a real-time computerised information service, PALS, offers users access to the complete stock, including specialised sources of information. |
