Food for thought

THE Wilmot Africa Projects in Paarl, working with streetchildren, received a large donation of food stuffs from Paarl Rotary Club.

The feeding scheme of Paarl Rotary is part of the Rotary District project in which food is collected from manufacturers for distribution through Rotary before the products' expiry date.

"Paarl Rotary has distributed 21 tons (29 pallets) of food within our area and this goes with great thanks to Tiger Brands that helped us make the 21 tons possible," says President Luc Bouckaert.

Other recipients of food parcels were Rusthof old age home, Khomalo's Nest & Vivian Jephtas, Amstelhof Primary, Miqlat Community Centre, Salvation Army Paarl, Rusoord old age home, as well as the Stellenbosch and Wellington Rotary feeding schemes.


Walk for Hospice

THE annual fun walk in aid of Paarl Hospice will take place on Saturday 25 October. The event starts at 08:00 at the Paarl Rugby Club, next to the Paarl Cricket Grounds in Market Street.

This year will see the usual 8km fun walk as well as an 11km Spring walk. Entrance fee for the fun walk is R15 and for the Spring walk R20.

Collect your entry form from the Paarl Hospice office in Breda Street and together with your postal order or cheque made payable to Paarl Hospice, posted to Paarl Hospice Family Walk, PO Box 6130, Paarl 7622.

All entries must reach the office by 22 October at 13:00. Late entries will be accepted the morning of the walk at an additional R5 per entry.


Wellington flower festival

THE Wellington Garden Club will hold its biennial flower festival at Nelson's Creek Wine Estate on the Klapmuts-Wellington Road (R44 Agter Paarl Road) tomorrow and Saturday from 08:00 to 17:00.

The show will be opened by the Drakenstein Mayor, alderman Herman Bailey tomorrow at 09:00.

There will be a coffee shop, craft and farm market, light lunches, home and plant stalls where plants, garden and home products, water features, baskets and garden furniture will be for sale.

The show includes several open gardens, none of which have been open to the public before.

Gardens vary from strictly indigenous, cycads, rose gardens to large landscaped farm gardens. All the open gardens can also be visited until 17:00 each day.

The farm Optenhorst will also be open to the public at an additional gate fee.

The proceeds of this fee will go to the upliftment of the Bovlei farm community.

In addition flower arrangements by leaders in the industry will be on display.

On Friday Denise Deetlefs from Worcester will host a talk on "Gardening Misfortunes to Planting Pleasures" and on Saturday Jeff Milne and Louis van As will talk about "The Woman's Circle of Life" with the emphasis on the 21st birthday of the Wellington Garden Club.

A percentage of the funds raised will go to Silwerkruin old age home and frail care, Sunfield Homes for the mentally handicapped, Andrew Murray Home for children and the SPCA.

Jeugbedieningspan vir
Paarl beoog

YOUNG Dynamix is op soek na wedergebore jongmense om deel te wees van 'n jeugbedieningspan wat op die been gebring gaan word in die Paarl.

Die span, onder die leierskap van Rudi Young, sal aan die Paarlse tak van die Lig en Lewe Selkerk behoort.

Om aansoek te doen moet jy ongetroud, tweetalig (Engels/Afrikaans), tussen 17-25 jaar oud en van enige Christelike kerkverband wees.

Daar sal net 12-15 lede wees en aktiwiteite begin op 12 Januarie.

Studente sal bedieningsvaardighede leer wat drama, berading, musiek, produksies, gemeenskapsdiens en leierskap insluit.

Stap teen borskanker

OKTOBER is borskanker-bewusmakingsmaand en die Suid-Afrikaanse Kankervereniging (Kansa) bied in samewerking met die Paarl Medi-Clinic Woensdag om 18:00 'n 5 km pretstap aan wat by die Paarlse stadsaal begin. 

Inskrywings begin 17:00. Inskrywingsgeld is R15 (R10 vir skoliere en studente en R15 vir volwassenes).

Daar gaan hope pryse wees, onder meer vir die skool en sakeonderneming met die hoogste gemiddelde inskrywings, die beste kreet en/of slagspreuk vir borskankerbewusmaking, beste spangees en stapper van die dag.

Die organiseerders hoop om met die pretstap nie net die fokus op borskanker te plaas nie, maar ook om noodsaaklike fondse in te samel.

Borskanker is die kanker wat die meeste onder vrouens wêreldwyd voorkom en tref 1 uit elke 36 Suid-Afrikaanse vroue.

Met die bewusmakingsveldtog hoop Kansa onder meer  om vroeë opsporing te bewerkstellig. 

Sodoende is daar nie net 'n groter kans dat behandeling suksesvol is nie, maar word ook meer behandelingsopsies gebied.


Bursaries for hair stylists

AS a part of our ongoing commitment to develop the community, Paarl Rotary Club is offering fifteen bursaries, valued at R6500 per person, to individuals in the Wellington, Paarl and Franschhoek areas to be trained in Afro Hair Care from 1 November to 31 December.

The course is ideally suited to individuals (male and female) who have a basic knowledge of hair care and are interested to further their skills and knowledge.

The qualifying criteria for candidates are fluency in English/Afrikaans, a Std 7 certificate, a keen aptitude for hair dressing, no skin allergies and sound communication and people skills as well as the ability to work under pressure.

Successful candidates must have access to hot running water at home, electricity and a large enough area to set up a salon.
