WYNMAKERS moet nou die geleentheid aangryp om hul uitsonderlike wyne vir die Veritas Toekennings in te skryf. Inskrywings sluit op 14 Augustus. Dié prestige toekennings - wat sedert 1992 deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Wynskouvereniging (SANW) aangebied word - bekroon jaarliks wyne van hoogstaande gehalte. Veritas plakkertjies, wat na afloop van die toekennings op wenwyne verskyn, dien ook as 'n gesaghebbende gehaltemaatstaf vir verbruikers. Beoordeling vind van 1 tot 5 September op Nederburg plaas. Riglyne vir die beoordeling van die verskillende wynstyle, soos deur die toepaslike gehaltegroepe vir spesifieke style of kultivars neergelê, sal tydens beoordeling toegepas word. 'n Dubbelgoud Veritasmedalje word op konsensusbasis toegeken mits die sewe beoordelaars op 'n paneel 17 of meer punte uit 20 toeken. Goud word toegeken wanneer die wyn 17 punte behaal, silwer vir 16 punte en brons wanneer die wyn 'n punt van 15 kry. Die gesogte dubbelgoud en goud toekennings sal op Vrydag 3 Oktober tydens 'n galadinee op Nederburg vir vanjaar se uitblinkerwyne toegeken word. SMALL tourism enterprises in the Western Cape will have a unique opportunity to market themselves to key industry players at the Western Cape Tourism Showcase. The showcase, which takes place from 15 to 17 August, provides small and medium sized businesses the chance to gain exposure in markets that are usually out of their reach. It will be the first tourism expo to be held at the Cape Town Convention Centre and will be one of the biggest tourism expos in the country, as this year it will be combined with the Flight Centre and Outdoor Adventure expos and will provide visitors with a wide choice. THE establishment of township tours for Mbekweni may be on the cards in the near future. Paarl Tourism is looking at a new marketing strategy that will include the whole town and all its communities. Gerhard Meyer, chairperson of Paarl Tourism, said they have already identified two possible projects. The first is a fresh flower market and a Malay restaurant, run by the Coloured and Muslim communities. The second is township tours, which were discussed at a meeting on Monday. Meyer spoke to a gathering of crafters and tavern owners, saying it was time the town made use of tourism opportunities. He invited interested people on a tour to the township tours project in Hout Bay, to study the feasibility of such tours. According to Meyer Paarl Tourism is prepared to open an office in Mbekweni to help with the organisation of tours, marketing and training of tour guides. A further possibility is a showroom where crafters can exhibit there produce. However, people must not have too many expectations: "The market will grow slowly. If tourists enjoy the tours, they will tell friends and that's how you grow a market." Meyer said there was no need for crafters to become members of Paarl Tourism.
