Cinderella gets shoes

Leigh Reitz

wnosisiIMAGINE it's three days before your matric farewell ball: your glittering gown is safely tucked away at the dressmaker's and you're already dreaming of the big night.

Then, your house burns down to the ground, with those trendy shoes that were going to round off your smart outfit, inside.

This is what happened to Nosisi Sijaji (19), pupil at Desmond Tutu High School in Mbekweni last week.

She, her mother and nine-year-old sister, crawled through a window to escape the flames that left them homeless.

DAINTY SLIPPERS. Nosisi receives her matric dance shoes from Moira Pascall.

Nosisi was stranded without shoes and she prepared herself to have to miss the most important night of her matric career.

But when a local shoe store read about her miseries in the Paarl Post, the owners decided to open their hearts to her.

On Thursday afternoon they phoned the distressed girl and told her to come and pick out any pair of shoes she wanted.

"The report in the newspaper touched our hearts so much and we decided to help this poor girl in need, so that she could attend the matric ball in style," said Economic Shoe Store co-owner Moira Pascall.

With a happy smile Nosisi decided on a pair of dainty black shoes to match her outfit.

"I am very thankful for the store's gesture. I had a wonderful time at the matric ball and the shoes went perfect with my grey-and-black outfit," she said.

Councillor Charlotte Stemela, who assisted her, thanked everybody who phoned in to assist Nosisi.

wgate17"PARENTS are keeping their children at home, because most of our stuff had been stolen over the past months," says Nancy Tybosch, head of the Langabuya Crèche in Mbekweni.

On the floor sit about twenty toddlers, all that are left of the crèche's fifty pupils.

"First they stole our stove. Now they have stolen a second stove, all our pots and even the kids' spoons, plates and blankets."

The crèche has the loan of a kerosene stove to prepare food and the pupils have to bring their own plates and

spoons.

Twice the thieves broke the security gate of the crèche to enter the building, despite attempts to make it more secure.

The SAPS closed the first case without finding the culprits and the second time the school didn't phone them.

Polisie soek Pagad in Paarl

"Ek het dit gedoen, want ek was so oorbluf," vertel Nackerdien.
