WIL u oorhoofse koste verminder en produksie verhoog?  Die oplossing is kontrakwerk.

DIE Paarl publiek is uitgelewer aan die brutaliteit van sommige straatventers.

Ek het om 10:00 op 10 Maart na Absa bank in die Wagenmakerspleinsentrum (by Paarl Pick 'n Pay) gegaan. 'n Seun van ongeveer 12 jaar wou 'n sak druiwe aan my vir R10 verkoop.

Ek sê toe nee dankie en stap aan.

'n Paar tree verder bied 'n volwasse straatventer my presies dieselfde verpakking en grootte druiwe aan vir R5.

Ek reageer positief en die klein seuntjie wat saamgedrentel het met 'n aanhoudende aandrang om by hom te koop sê onmiddellik hy sal R4 neem.

Ek koop toe die R5 pak en die klein seuntjie dreig my tot terug by my motor, met die ondenkbaarste aggressie dat hy my sal doodskiet en dat hy my motor in die toekoms sal beskadig en hy sal my voorlê met 'n mes en my keel afsny.

Ek sê toe hy is kwaad vir homself omdat hy blatant lieg met sy pryse om mense in te loop.

Hy verseker my hy was in die tronk, wys snyplekke aan sy lyf en sê hy het al iemand vermoor, en ek is die volgende een wat hy gaan vermoor.

Ek wou hom 'n etekaartjie van die Wilmot-sentrum aanbied.

Soveel moord in 'n kinderoog is skrikwekkend en ek voel iets moet gedoen word aan hierdie jong kinders om beter landsburgers van hulle te maak, vir 'n veiliger toekoms.

I DON'T think the Wheels Expo held in Paarl on 6 March was a "non-event" as stated on page 2  (in the Hearsay column of Paarl Post on 11 March.

This is the first year the event was organized, and very well organized at that.

Logic tells me that there are always teething problems with any first event, this one was and would be no exception.

And logic also tells me that an event of this nature will grow year by year in terms of visitors.

Fact is, this event, the first of its kind in Paarl, can be regarded as one of the major motor shows in the Western Cape to date.

In my humble opinion, it will grow from year to year, both in terms of exhibitors and attendance. Just think where the KKNK was some years ago and where it is today, and this could have been Paarl reaping the benefits thereof as Oudtshoorn is doing today. The KKNK also started on a small scale. Need I say more ?

To the organisers, helpers and volunteers, thank you for your effort, work and time as well as the courage to do it.

To the exhibitors and sponsors, thank you very much for your support. To the supporting public, thank you for attending.     

Old Paarl Boytjie

ENIGE persoon wat al ooit by 'n organisasie of vereniging in die Paarl betrokke was, en enige projek aangebied het waar publieke bywoning verwag word, sal besef hoe ontsettend moeilik dit is om in die Paarl te bemark. 

So is dit weer onlangs ervaar met Paarl Teaterklub se aanbieding van die komedie "Die Waterwyser".  

Om 'n banier oor Hoofstraat te laat opsit, kos meer as R1000, en is nie binne alle organisasies se begroting nie. 

Weinig winkeleienaars laat meer toe dat plakkate in hul vensters aangebring word, en baniere teen heinings word eenvoudig gesteel.

Deur die Paarl Post is duisende gesinne in die vallei bereik, en het niemand 'n verskoning gehad nie om te sê: "Ek weet nie wat in die Paarl aangaan nie". 

Baie dankie aan Paarl Post vir sy voortgesette ondersteuning van plaaslike nie-winsgewende organisasies soos die Ou Meulteater, veral ten opsigte van reklame berigte. Dit word opreg waardeer.

THERE are minibus taxis that I have seen driving around Paarl (many adorned with election material) which are so obviously unroadworthy that the following questions come to mind:

* Are our traffic police blind?

* Are the taxi drivers above the law?

* Is there a general moratorium on giving taxis a ticket for transgression of the law?

One particular taxi was billowing smoke out of the exhaust.

Their shock absorbers look suspect and the tyres look as if they do not have the legal tread required by law.

Must we first see bodies before traffic action is taken?

Concerned motorist

I WOULD like to thank Paarlberg Motors for their kind assistance on Monday morning 8 March.

Feeling like the proverbial "woman driver" (I had left my lights on, my battery was flat and my jumper cables were at home) I approached them for help and they immediately sent their service vehicle to my rescue - without charge.

Who needs a knight on a white horse when they are around! Many thanks.

A BOOM period may lie around the corner for Paarl, which has long suffered from a shrinking economy and a lack of vision and co-ordination in town planning.

That is probably why so many local residents flocked to a meeting where the developer of the proposed Paarl Mall finally put his cards on the table last week.

The deterioration of the CBD due to the influx of vagrants and hawkers has left its mark, leading to a drop in traffic, especially in upper income consumers.

And it is this loss that concerned retailers hope to make up by the development of the new shopping centre in Paarl South.

The centre could also become an important retail focus for the increasing number of property developments in the pipeline in the area south of Paarl.

Although the property market of Paarl seems to be moving south, this does not mean that one should sit back and do nothing about the depressed CBD in the northern half of the town.

An upgrade of the central area could be a considerable spur to economic growth - especially when competition is looming on the horizon.

Maybe that is why landlords and town fathers have put their heads together and are working against the clock on a plan to save the CBD.
