It was therefore extremely important to complete the foundation work before the onset of the winter rains, and this objective was achieved.
The winery is designed to accommodate 500 tons of wine in nine metre high stainless steel wine tanks. A precast walling system was used to achieve the nine metre high walls which was built into the surrounding ground.
The enormous 9m x 2,5m precast walls were cast on the floor of the building to obtain a more dense concrete.
Then each 20 ton wall was lifted vertically into position where it is temporarily stayed whilst the internal structure of the building is being completed.
This 'tilt-up' construction system is used extensively throughout the USA, Europe and Australia, but is relatively new in South Africa.
Within the cellar roof are concrete domes and vaults which were also precast in an adjacent yard on site, and lifted into place in order to achieve a more regular finish and save on construction time.
The Avondale Winery is being built by Neil Muller Construction on a Design and Construct basis.
Other members of the project team include KMH Architects, Kantley & Templer Consulting Engineers, Strata Civils, Northern Electric and H Saban Plumbing. |
