Cellar under construction at Avondale winery

[ Top ]

wavonTHE construction of the Avondale Winery outside Paarl at a cost of R13 million commenced in March and is on schedule for completion by the end of October.

The construction of the winery and wine-tasting facility of 5762 square metres in Klein Drakenstein is unique in a number of ways.

The winery is being built in an old, dry river valley, thus reducing the bulk of the building.

The facility will provide an underground wine cellar nine metres deep with the advantage of cooler, and more consistent temperatures.

WINERY. Construction of the Avondale Winery outside Paarl is progressing well. With members of the construction team are Shaun Webber (rear left), MD of Neil Muller Construction, and Peter Mager (second from right), senior site manager.

It was therefore extremely important to complete the foundation work before the onset of the winter rains, and this objective was achieved.

The winery is designed to accommodate 500 tons of wine in nine metre high stainless steel wine tanks. A precast walling system was used to achieve the nine metre high walls which was built into the surrounding ground.

The enormous 9m x 2,5m precast walls were cast on the floor of the building to obtain a more dense concrete.

Then each 20 ton wall was lifted vertically into position where it is temporarily stayed whilst the internal structure of the building is being completed.

This 'tilt-up' construction system is used extensively throughout the USA, Europe and Australia, but is relatively new in South Africa.

Within the cellar roof are concrete domes and vaults which were also precast in an adjacent yard on site, and lifted into place in order to achieve a more regular finish and save on construction time.

The Avondale Winery is being built by Neil Muller Construction on a Design and Construct basis.

Other members of the project team include KMH Architects, Kantley & Templer Consulting Engineers, Strata Civils, Northern Electric and H Saban Plumbing.

Boost for Roodeberg

[ Top ]

ROODEBERG, KWV International's best known red blend, has achieved a significant listing in the United Kingdom.

First Quench Retail has recently listed the 1999 vintage which will be available to consumers in the 2 088 outlets of Threshers, Victoria Wines, Bottoms Up and Wine Rack from early September.

This is excellent news for Roodeberg which is currently enjoying huge success in other markets, notably the United States, Germany and Sweden.

During the next few months, several events are planned that will increase the awareness of Roodeberg in the UK, among them advertising in the BBC Proms Concert Programme, which targets 300 000 potential wine consumers and will be distributed at 70 concerts between July and September this year.

Produced since the late 1940's, Roodeberg is a blend of noble red varietals, at 5.99 pounds a bottle in the UK. This market accounts for 30% of KWV International's exports.
