Walk in the park

[ Top ]

THE Novel Paarl team took a commanding lead in the Boland's Premier league competition on Saturday, when they thrashed nearest rivals, Coronation Cricket Club of Pniel, by a humiliating 149 runs.

The log leaders have now secured maximum points in six outings this season, but Coronations' log position (unbeaten in four matches) suggested that they would provide tougher opposition. Although the big crowd was disappointed by the visitors' poor display with the bat, they did appreciate the fact that the Paarl team finished early enough two weeks in a row to see the Springboks kick off.

Coronations captain, Andrew Cyster, gambled when he elected to bowl first in the sweltering heat. Although Jacques van Wyk (3/51) struck twice in quick succession, he came in for heavy punishment from Wesley Euley (79).

CENTURY. Wayne Williams, opening batsman of Paarl Cricket Club's second team scored an impressive 133 runs in their match against Coronation at the Parys grounds on Saturday. Paarl II won the match convincingly.

Facing only 74 balls, Euley showed his attacking intent early on, favouring the leg side for his nine boundaries. He looked set for his first century of the season until he was brilliantly caught in the deep by a diving Ryno Arendse.

Captain Lynal Jansen (41) was the perfect foil for the hard hitting Euley, consolidating the middle order brilliantly with a 96 run partnership in 90 balls for the fourth wicket.

Anwell Newman (34) and Lyndon Fredericks swung the bat merrily towards the end to effectively take the match away from the opposition.

With a challenging target of 244 in 60 overs, Coronations' highly rated batting line-up was expected to give the crowd value for money, but Fredericks struck early, and when Ultallyn Erntzen (5/22 in 11 overs) joined the fray in the 15th over, the crowd was stunned to see the visitors being bundled out for just 94.

Arendse, middle order batsman for Free State last season, was neatly caught behind off Erntzen's fourth ball, starting a mini collapse.

Not to be outdone by Arendse's brilliant catch earlier in the day, Faghrie Jacobs held onto a full blooded drive from Van Wyk, to give Erntzen his fourth wicket at shortish mid-off.

Cyster (17) and Verno Stubbs (21) fought in vain, as Dave Callaghan (3/26) supported Erntzen excellently from the clubhouse end, to see the match wrapped up in the 40th over.

Paarl travel to Hermanus for another crucial match on Saturday, hoping to avenge last season's defeat.

Paarl II (269/8) did not have much trouble getting the result they wanted against Coronation II on the B pitch, thanks to a brilliant knock by opening batsman Wayne Williams (133).

Williams hit 21 boundaries in his 159 ball stay, sharing an opening stand of 98 runs with captain Marco Walters, as well as a 106 run second wicket partnership with the young Englishman, William Wilson (51), who hit nine boundaries.

The visitors (166 in 57 overs) never really threatened the home team's total, thanks to Heinrich Daniels (3/55), Rohan Goetham (2/31) and Richard Cunningham (2/18).

Paarl II will host Hermanus II on Saturday.

Paarl III also got back to their winning ways, easily beating Correctional Services by 30 runs at Allandale. Paul Campbell (42), Jody Carolissen (36) and Bradley Isaacs (35) were the batting heroes who saw Paarl setting a target of 175 in the allotted 50 overs, after Harmse and Anderson had been given some stick.

David Ramsey (46) top scored for the home team, but Alan Alexander (4/26) and Denolin Cornelissen (2/26) ensured that the wardens were dismissed for 144 in 36 overs.

On Saturday, Paarl III hosts Easterns III, while Paarl IV hosts Ceres.

Bumper swim at Ashanti

[ Top ]

THIS year the 118 entries at the Winelands Charity Swim almost doubled that of previous years and 107 swimmers completed the Mile course in the Palmietrivier Dam on the Ashanti Wine Estate which was held the weekend before last.

In addition 12 youngsters swam the 200 metre race and five teams participated in the 4x200 metre relay race.

The weather was excellent and the water temperature perfect for the swim.  All participants thoroughly enjoyed the event and local businesses donated a wide range of prizes for category winners.

For the third consecutive, year the Mile Swim was won by Schalk Jooste (15) of Bellville Aquarama in a time of 21 minutes 3 seconds.

Jade Antunes (17) was runner-up and the first woman home.

Large numbers of Cape Town swimmers dominated the event, although Paarl swimmers made up a good proportion along with swimmers from Stellenbosch, Worcester and George.

Bernard Manzoni, a disabled swimmer from Bellville completed the course in 1:03:06, followed by the oldest swimmer, Rae Smit (84), from George who is a regular participant in this event together with her two daughters and two grandchildren.

The Khula Development Group, supporting the Street Children of Paarl, is the beneficiary for this event.

Bergrivier ploeter steeds voort

[ Top ]

Peoples I en II speel Saterdag tuis teen Malmesbury.

Drie Paarliete in Statebond sewespan

[ Top ]
