THE eighth Spier Arts Summer Season runs until 27 March with four months of non-stop, high-quality entertainment as Spier extends the outdoor theatre experience throughout the Estate.
In keeping with the reputation of quality for which Spier is renowned, this year's programme comprises shows by our country's finest performers, set in the splendour of the Cape winelands.
Jazz lovers, under a canopy of Southern stars, can listen to favourites by Dave Brubeck, Norah Jones and Jimmy Dludlu performed by a trio of Southern songbirds on 19 and 20 December. This contemporary jazz-infused weekend is directed by impresario Mike Campbell.
Famed local jazz duo, Ian and Richard Smith complete the season with the Nedbank Big Band Finale - a dazzling display of lights and big band swing.
The Spier Arts Trust has scooped the world première of The End is Naai from South African cultural icon, Pieter-Dirk Uys. Its searing social commentary "puts the mock back in democracy", as Uys says.
William Kentridge's sublime animated short films will also be viewed for the first time as a single body of work projected onto 35mm, accompanied by a string quartet.
Spier is delighted to host Judith Sephuma, who sang to sold-out performances at last year's festival, and SA's much-loved and respected troubadour, Vusi Mahlasela.
Dimpho Di Kopane (DDK), Sotho for "combined talents", is the new name of SA's most internationally acclaimed opera company, formally known as Broomhill Opera.
DDK has returned to SA from a worldwide tour to London's West End, America, Australia, Canada and Turkey.
The outstanding performances of Carmen, Ibali looTsotsi The Beggar's Opera and Yimimangaliso The Mysteries have had critics raving and audiences clamouring for tickets wherever they go.
Now there is a wonderful opportunity to see this talented cast back at Spier. They will be presenting two immensely popular shows, the raucous cult 1970's hit the Rocky Horror Show and John Gay's Ibali looTsotsi The Beggar's Opera.
Spier has focused on extending the outdoors arts experience and visitors can now enjoy shows in the amphitheatre as well as on the Werf.
The Spier Arts Trust has enlisted internationally acclaimed playwright, Brett Bailey and his theatre troupe "third world bunfight" (of Big Dada, Ipi Zombi and iMumbo Jumbo fame).
Bailey will be choreographing performances on the Werf, the lawned square bordered by Spier's historic buildings. The programme will encompass art in its many manifestations: storytelling, theatre, dance, and opera.
Visual arts also represents a strong component of this year's Arts Season. Spier presents its second Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biennale, Waterway.
The FNB Craft Now Awards 2003 Exhibition, Animals and Other Creatures will be hosted in Spier's Manor House. |
