Car guards put nails in my
car tyres

[ Top ]

I appeal to all residents of Paarl to protest the situation with socalled "car guards" and vagrants which has become totally unbearable and unacceptable.

I reside in Klapmuts and have the need to visit Paarl almost on a daily basis where I am accosted by vagrants who pretend to be "finders" of open parking spaces and who pretend to be guardians of one's vehicle - for a fee.

These people frequent property belonging to the city council - the parking area adjacent to Pick 'n Pay, all of Lady Grey Street as well as the parking area Patriot Square.

They act as if they are the owners of these parking areas and when I refused to pay them, I was told that my vehicle's tyres would be damaged. I felt really threatened by this aggressive attitude.

The last five occasions I have gone to Paarl, I have been able to find open parking spaces without having to rely upon the assistance of any outsider. I then stay in the car whilst my wife does her shopping.

On every occasion I refused to pay a "parking fee" and on every occasion I found my rear right hand tyre deflated with a nail penetrating the wheel in the middle of the tread.

We now avoid coming to Paarl and we shop elsewhere, where we are not threatened or bothered in any way.

I would like to call upon the Town Council to mount video surveilance cameras at strategic places. This could lead to the perpetrators being brought to book.

WH Hamann

Hoekom so suur oor jeug

Bad service from cellphone shop

[ Top ]

WE all want to see Paarl flourish and have people spend money locally, but after my terrible experience involving a local business (MTN Paarl Mobile Solutions) I don't see how I can support them anymore.

I needed my Motorola phone repaired and handed it in at our local MTN store on 27 November.

After a myriad of calls, follow-up calls and then some more calls I managed to find out that the cost to repair the phone would be R180. I promptly paid this amount on 7 January and gave MTN a copy of the deposit slip.

Every time that I visited the shop they blamed the courier, the workshop or said that the phone is in Johannesburg. They made no effort to help me.

I got no loan phone and I only got my phone back on 23 January after phoning the Western Cape manager - nearly two months later.

Why did I have to turn the heat up to such a degree in order to get my phone back?

Meanwhile I had been paying subscription fees for two months without a phone.

I have been a loyal MTN client for four years, but this doesn't mean a thing to them so I have decided to cancel my MTN contract.

They spend millions on advertising - how about putting some money into customer service?

Elizma Hanekom

ACR Correia, Director of Mobile Solutions, replies:

Due to an oversight at our taore due to a staff change, the phone was only booked into MTN SP Workshop located in Johannesburg on 15 December 2003 (a delay of two weeks).

For this oversight on our part we are prepared to refund the customer her full month's subscription of R129,50 plus other compulsory monthly charges.

A deposit for the amount of R152,34 will be made into the client's MTN account in the course of this week.

As the phone was out of warranty the client was phoned by MTN SP on 17 December to state the repairs to her phone would cost R180 and that this amount was to be paid into the MTN SP bank account. The bank account details were supplied to the client.

The client failed to act on this phone call and on 4 January 2004 MTN SP contacted our Paarl store who immediately contacted the client to deposit the money into the Bank account.

The client did so on 7 January at the Standard Bank in Paarl.

On 15 January (a Thursday) the phone was ready at the MTN SP workshop in Johannisburg and as they only despatch phones to Paarl once a week (normally on a Monday), the phone was sent the following Monday 19 January.

The phone was received in Paarl on 21 January and the client collected it.

From the above facts the longest delay was due to the client's failure to deposit the repair costs for over 3 weeks.

(The client denies that she was contacted on 17 December - the first contact was a phone call she received early in January. - Ed.)
