Thrashed!

Leon Steenkamp

[ Top ]

lshowzat2ONE of the big exponents with regards to South Africa's future in the World Cup tournament, Sri Lanka, yesterday thrashed a meagre looking Canadian side at Boland Park, securing their third consecutive World Cup victory.

RECURRING NIGHTMARE. The sight of the Sri Lankan bowlers appealing during yestersday's match and the quick succession with which the wickets fell, must have felt like a recurring nightmare for the Canadian batsmen. Canada suffered a world record defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka after being bowled out for a mere 36 runs. Pic: Leon Steenkamp

The fast bowling duo of Sri Lanka, Chaminda Vaas and Prabath Nissanka, crippled the Canadian batting line up early on, taking seven wickets between the two of them and only conceding 27 runs.

In doing so Vaas became the tournament's highest wicket taker.

Dilhara Fernando (2/4) and Muttiah Muralitharan (1/3) added the finishing touches leaving the Canadians blushing on a world record low score of 36 all out after 18,4 overs.

Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu (24*), Sanath Jayasuriya (9) who was caught leg before by Sanjayan Thuraisingam, and Kumar Sangakkara (4*) tied up the match within five overs.

Sri Lanka is currently top of the log in group B with 12 points, followed by New Zealand (8) and the West Indies (6).

Before yesterday's match Jayasuriya was the batsman with the highest scoring average of 175 at a strike rate of 96,15 with his highest score being 120 which he smashed against New Zealand.

The Sri Lankan skipper said earlier this week that their middle order is in need of some batting practice. But after yesterday's bulldozer-victory that will have to wait until they meet Kenya in their next match.

Jayasuriya was positive about his team's chances in the tournament.

"The way we are playing at the moment, I think we have a very good chance," he said. "We should simply continue to play our natural game like we have been doing. I feel we are peaking at the right time."

The Canadians' fighting spirit in the previous two matches where they beat Bangladesh by 60 runs and went down by four wickets against Kenya made the cricket public sit up and take notice, but they were simply outplayed by the Sri Lankans.

The ex-New Zealander Ian Billcliff, who scored 42 and 71 for Canada could only put a single run on the board.

After South Africa's disappointing bowling display which ended in a nine-wicket defeat against New Zealand on Sunday, the Proteas now have to win all their remaining games including Sri Lanka. Earlier this victory would only have had relevance for the home team if the West Indies also beat Sri Lanka beforehand to ensure the Proteas of a possible place in the top six.

But after Monday's match between West Indies and Bangladesh rained out, things would suit SA better if Sri Lanka get one over on the Windies.

Ek is dadelik af," vertel hy.
