INCREDIBLE. Dewald Venter could not believe his eyes when he saw snow on Paarl Mountain - enough to make a snowball with! This is the first time in decades that snow was recorded on Paarl Mountain, although snow fell in Main Street in 1914.                      Foto: Hilda Bence

Klappertand

Leigh Reitz

Beer bash on pass

[ Top ]

A HEAVY truck spilled its cargo of beer down an embankment in Bain's Kloof Pass when it's trailer partially tipped over the cliff on Monday.

Broken beer bottles lay strewn down to the bank of the Witte River.

The driver of the Etosha Transport truck could not negotiate the vehicle around the first sharp bend on the Worcester side of the pass.

The vehicle hung halfway over the side of the mountain after smashing through the 150 year old stone walls.

The driver sustained slight injuries.

The pass was closed for the entire day to manoeuvre the truck back onto the road and out of the pass.

Full and broken beer bottles, plastic and carton packaging littered the mountainside.

"We desperately need proper signage," members of the Friends of Bain's Kloof emphasised again this week.

This truck was low enough to pass under the height restriction bar, but its weight exceeded the 5 ton limit, Sieg Kröger said.

"But it was the length of the truck that caused the accident. And Province is still deciding on the acceptable length before putting up warning road signs."xt

Man missing

[ Top ]

A YOUNG Wellington man is still missing after he gave two strangers a lift in his car three weeks ago.

Mbulelo Cekiso (22) was last seen at his home in 5 Ntlombo Street, OR township, on 6 August.

He left at 17:30 on that day in his red 3 series BMW (CA 271467) for Porterville. He gave two people, their identity unknown to his family, a lift.

Nothing has been heard of him since. The car is also missing.

Mbulelo wore a golden ring on his left hand. Information which can assist the police in tracing the man, can be given to Insp Steven Moore, 873-1141.

* The semi-decomposed body of man was discovered over a tree stump in the Berg River opposite the Wellington refuse dump last week.

It is possible that the man was in his mid-twenties and that he had been in the water for a week.

He was clad in a shortsleeved shirt with greenish stripes, grey trousers and a black leather belt, black socks and black shoes lined with cardboard. He wore a metal signet ring with a black stone.

It has not been possible to identify the body and further forensic tests are being conducted. Insp Niel de Lange (873-1141) is the investigating officer.

Glyjakkals skuldig

[ Top ]

Poisoners will be prosecuted

[ Top ]

THE Paarl SPCA has issued a stern warning to residents who put out poisoned food or trap domestic animals which may stray onto their properties.

The SPCA will use all the means at its disposal to prosecute those wilfully harming animals or putting out poison without taking due precaution as prescribed under the Animal Protection Act (Act 71 of 1962).

Penalties of up to a year's imprisonment without the option of a fine may be prescribed.

The SPCA has already distributed written warnings to people living in the Orange and Mill Street areas to be on their guard against anyone who may hide dishes of food under bushes, set cat traps and throw poisoned food over garden walls to entice domestic pets.

Residents in the area have reported the loss of five of their cats, while at least one cat and two dogs have survived an agonising ordeal after ingesting what is suspected to be poisoned cat food.

Not only have the owners of these animals incurred heavy veterinary expenses to save their animals, but have experienced the trauma of watching them suffer.

Stomach contents and samples of the suspect food have been sent away to Onderstepoort for analysis.

Veterinary opinion is that an organo-phosphate is being used which is also deadly to birds and wild life. Young children are also at risk.

The Animal Protection Act specifies that it is an offence to lay or expose any poison or any poisoned fluid or edible matter or infectious agents, except for the destruction of vermin or marauders, without taking reasonable precautions to prevent injury or disease being caused; or to lay any trap or other device for the purpose of capturing or destroying any animal, wild animal or wild bird, the destruction of which is not proved to be necessary.

Hugo Coetzee of Orange Street almost lost his beloved bull terrier, Max, which showed all the symptoms of organo-phosphate poisoning - salivation, spasms, paralysis of the legs and so on.

The animal suffered excruciating pain before it was finally pulled through by a local vet.

One cat belonging to the Cargills in Mill Street was found dead in a neighbouring property near a bowl of food.

Anyone who can throw fresh light on the matter is invited to contact Linda Groenewald at the SPCA (863-2720) or Hugo Coetzee at 083-290-7481.

* The SPCA is also looking for information on youths who have been tormenting and hurting cats in the vicinity of the Toringkerk. One cat with a broken back from being struck with a heavy object or kicked, had to be put down recently.
