wcharlAN experience of a lifetime - that is how Charldene Cameron of Wellington describes her two months as a youth councillor on a luxury passenger ship in Alaska.
"A home away from home was the company's motto, and that is exactly how I felt," says Charldene.
She travelled on the Norwegian Sky, cruising from Alaska to Victoria, British Columbia and ending in Seattle, Washington..

months before she received a phone call from the agents in Cape Town.

"After two interviews I had no doubt that this company was professional and real. There was no registration fee, but you are required to go for a full medical examination which is reinbursed once you're on the ship."

Charldene was finally accepted as youth councillor. The requirements are that one should be over the age of 18, mature and independent.

"I met many people from different cultures and at the same time taught them about South Africa."

However, Charldene warns people to be careful when responding to advertisements for jobs on cruise ships.

"First find out about the agency and the shipping company, as well as any fees that may be payable."

Charldene is enjoying a few weeks vacation at home and looks forward to join the ship again for the cruise to the Caribbean Islands
