wtripOP DOLLE VAART. Foto: Leon Steenkamp

Another soccer field for Mbekweni teams

SOCCER clubs in Mbekweni who are fed up with the inadequate number of soccer fields as well as the poor condition of the existing fields in the township, will soon have an extra field at their disposal.

The over-utilisation of fields due to practices and illegal unscheduled matches as well as vandalism are the two main problems the Municipality faces, says Jacques Carstens, municipal manager of Drakenstein.

"We are currently busy with thousands of rands worth of repair work. The soccer season is supposed to end in November, after which the fields will undergo treatment.

"Unfortunately there are two Mbekweni teams who play in a league which only finishes its matches in April," says Carstens.

The teams are Mbekweni Cosmos and Mbekweni Sundowns, who both play in the semi-professional Castle Region League.

Apart from three soccer fields, the township has a rugby field (which is sometimes used for soccer with the rugby club's consent), an athletics track, netball/basketball courts and a sports centre.

The new field will be situated next to a local high school.

"R120 000 has been approved to build a field next to Desmund Tutu High School. But it means that a certain area will overlap with the adjacent grounds belonging to the Department of Education," says Carstens.

"As soon as this issue has been cleared up between the Department of Sport and the Department of Education, work will commence. We are hoping to start very soon.

"The field is meant as a community field, with no ablution blocks and lights, where teams can practice. But it will be up to standard for matches and no tariff will be paid," says Carstens.

According to Loyiso Sibelekwana, spokesperson of the Paarl Football and District Association (PFDA) to which the 29 football clubs of Mbekweni are affiliated, there is also unhappiness about field tariffs.

"The clubs in Mbekweni pay a more expensive tariff for use of the field and also for the flood lights and over-time for the caretaker than the R500 the Paarl Soccer Club pays at the Boy Louw fields," says Sibelekwana.

Carstens acknowledged that there had been an agreement between the Municipality and Paarl Soccer Club, but that it had been cancelled.

"The Paarl club will pay the same tariff as the Mbekweni clubs next season."

Sibelekwana also feels that private ownership of the fields could improve matters.

"We need a partnership with the Municipality, and hope ownership of the fields can be given to the community. The PFDA could get funds for the development of the facilities.

"The British Embassy is one party who is interested in supplying funds, but on condition that the community owns the field."

According to Carstens, such an arrangement could be problematic.

"Ownership can be given to an organisation, following an official application and agreement, but one must remember that a number of sporting codes and schools make use of these facilities.

"We must guard against things turning out as it has in Wellington where, after ownership of facilities was handed over to clubs, everything was broken and stolen and the clubs now expect the Municipality to step in and fix things."

Ontong skitter op tuisveld

[ Top ]

12de man: Benji Hector.

Paarl-Oos kort paaltjie

[ Top ]

Gerhard Engels (3/21) was Peoples se beste bouler.

New BMX track now poses greater challenge

[ Top ]

wanton21BMX enthusiasts in Paarl can now truly show off their talent on their steel steeds, when racing in and out the corners of the local track in Market Street.

The Municipality called in the help of Anton Nothnagel, an expert in BMX-track building, to redesign the Paarl track.

After initial great interest when the track

was first built, the riders' interest faded as the ramps held no challenge. The track has since been deserted.

BIGGER AND BETTER. Anton Nothnagel (right) explains to municipal worker Frikke de Wee exactly how he wants the quarterpipe ramp to look.

After Nothnagel's alterations, the track now poses a far greater challenge for the adventurous rider.

"I've visited the BMX-track in Saldanha where races are frequently held.

"It differs a lot from this track, and concentrates more on speed, whereas this track is more suitable for tricks," says Rory Phelan, of the Municipality's Parks Department.

Nothnagel, who has built ramps in London, agrees, saying that the 475m track is more of a "free ride trick track".

This does not however mean that races or competitions can't be held on the track.

"The kids must get together and start doing their own thing. They must work together with bike shops, start a club and host races.

"There is definite growth in the sport, but with skateboarding and other sports, people have overlooked it. With some attention from bike companies, it could be big," says Nothnagel.

Alterations to the track include a 50% height increase of the starting tabletop, bigger double jumps, berms moved further into the corners so that riders can take them with greater speed and a six foot quarterpipe ramp which can provide the platform for big airial tricks.

"The track won't need that much maintenance once it's been wet and all the air pockets are removed. Thereafter it will only need some looking after every six months."

Riders who had a go of the track on Monday, said the changes were great, but had problems with the soft sand of the ramps.

"It is the same type of sand we used to construct the first track, but it needs to be wet to get it compact," said Phelan on Thuesday morning, as municipal workers were busy wetting the track.

Although the ramps and humps will be built up every six months, the track itself will be cleaned twice a week to keep it free of broken bottles and litter.

Planned skatepark

The Parks Department and a local surf shop are discussing plans to build a skate park in Paarl.

"It is difficult to begin such a project without any co-ordinators. We are therefore looking to start a forum, consisting of ourselves, the Municipality, skateboarders, their parents as well as anyone who can help with the project," says Arno Swart of The Wild Side Surf Shop.

"The municipality has a number of sites we could use but to develop it into a skatepark will be very costly.

According to Phelan the preferred site will already be tarred or have a concrete slab.

"To tar it will cost R100 000, with the skatepark itself costing between R40 000 and R60 000," says Phelan.

Swart says they hope that building companies might join in and lend a hand by donating supplies.

"It must not be a flimsy thing just knocked together, we want it right the first time," he adds.

There are issues that need to be clarified, however, like the supervision and maintenance of the park. Swart hopes the forum of roleplayers will come up with the necessary answers.

Those interested can contact him at 872-5525.

New Year cycling Grand Prix held again

[ Top ]

AFTER a lull in cycling activities over the last few years, the traditional New Year cycling event will be back on the cycling calendar from 1 January 2003, at the Faure Street stadium in Paarl.

Yorkshire Wheelers Cycling Club, one of the oldest cycling clubs in the country, will organise this event and aim to get some of the top South African cyclists to compete.

To ensure that the broader public share in this exciting event, all spectators who purchase their tickets before 31 December stand a chance of winning great lucky prizes.

Schools, sport clubs as well as church organizations are also provided with a unique opportunity to raise funds by getting involved with this project.
