A HIGHLIGHT of the summer season at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre this year is the première of legendary Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla's highly rated tango "operita" Maria de Buenos Aires, which is presented until Saturday.
The production is made possible through a unique co-operation agreement between Oude Libertas (Distell) and all the important arts festivals: Aardklop, the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown; with a sponsorship by Toyota. The company Vleis, Rys, & Aartappels will produce, with direction by Marthinus Basson.
Tango legend Astor Piazzolla created the soulful opera Maria de Buenos Aires, with libretto by poet Horacio Ferrer, in 1968, during the turbulent years of one of the military dictatorships in Argentina.
United by ties of friendship, by shared dreams of freedom and by their passionate devotion to tango and its myths, their "urban operita" fearlessly questioned the moral and religious standards imposed by the ruling powers, touching issues of social violence, poverty, marginality, abuse and religious beliefs.
Maria is more than a tortured figure in a doomed love story: she is the embodiment of the city of Buenos Aires itself - beautiful and alluring, yet dark, insane and dangerous.
Nicole Holm will perform the title role of Maria, the prostitute, and Jose Domingos is the narrator El Duende (the Goblin). Dawid Minnaar is the leader of the chorus, taking the role of Payador, a traditional Spanish-Argentinian travelling folk-music singer.
Mark Hoeben is the choreographer, as well as the leading tango dancer with Ina Wichterich. Xandi van Dijk is the conductor, and the Sontonga Quartet forms the nucleus of the orchestra (Marc Uys and Waldo Alexander, violin; Xandi van Dijk, viola; Brian Choveaux, cello).
The Bulgarian virtuoso accordionist Stanislav Anguelov, founder of the Cape Town Tango Ensemble, will be playing the bandeneon/accordion. The rest of the orchestra consists of well-known musicians like Francois du Toit, piano; Magdalene de Vries and Heinrich Kruse, percussion; Daryll Andrews, guitar; Henrike Kovats, double bass and Brigette Rennie, flute. Elrina Marais designed the costumes and lighting is by Albert Snyman.
Director Marthinus Basson summarises the challenge: "The story of Maria, as told by El Duende/the Goblin, follows the tango as 'way of suffering', reincarnated in the being called Maria. "Murdered by an unholy conspiracy of thieves, she is raised from the dead by the poet to bring salvation and lead a rebellion against all oppression of the soul."
