ANCHOR sponsors of schoolrugby-rivalries, First National Bank (FNB), recently gave players from two local schools the oppertunity to play at the St John's College Easter Rugby Festival.
The FNB Invitation team was made up of learners from Klein Nederburg and New Orleans secondary schools. Both schools are made up largely of learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and could not otherwise afford to send their teams to the tournament.
FNB is a key partner of the three schools rugby tournaments which annually take place at King Edward VII School, St Johns College and St Stithians College over Easter.
The bank's involvement in rugby at the schools is part of its Classic Clash programme, which supports traditional rivalries between rugby-playing schools from all communities. The Classic Clash programme has been running for three years.
A new aspect of the project is the linking of the development programme to 15 schools. This will enable FNB to assist more rugby players and to develop the sport within communities that may not previously have had access to such opportunities.
"When FNB got the opportunity to support a development team for the Easter Schools Rugby Festival we wanted to choose a side that would benefit from the experience and yet be able to hold their own," says Francois Pienaar, Strategic Business Development, FNB.
"The Festival can go a long way towards broadening the players' horizons and exposing them to schoolboy rugby at a level beyond what they had previously experienced. We believe that the FNB Invitation Team will do us proud in the future," adds Pienaar.
"It has been a challenge to coach a team made up of players from two schools. The boys gained a lot from the entire experience," adds Garret Watts, coach of FNB team.
The FNB Invitation team locked horns with St Johns in their first match, beating the hosts 29-12.
In their second match they went down 32-6 against Paarl Boys' High. The debutants however, finished the tournament on a high note when they whipped Prince King Edward of Zimbabwe 29-20.
Paarl Boys' High also competed at the St Johns' Rugby Festival.
Although suffering quite a hiding of 33-6 at the hands of Afrikaanse Hoër Seunsskool (Affies) in their final match, they came away victorious earlier against Pretoria Boys' High (47-8) and their Paarl neighbours of Klein Nederburg and New Orleans secondary schools, who made up the FNB Invitation team, 32-6.
In their match against Oakdale on Saturday, Boys' High were once again tops winning 29-3.
* The u.19 team of Paarl Gymnasium had a blistering run at the St Stithians College Rugby Festival.
Gym won all three their matches beating Roodepoort High 44-15, King Edward 41-6 and even HTS Middelburg, who boasted a huge forward pack, 19-14. |
