Sundowns, Ajax battle looms

[ Top ]

THERE was joy once again in the Sundowns camp when the soccer champs of Mbekweni thrashed Jamestown Football Club 6-1 at the Bishop Lavis sportsgrounds last week.

After Sundowns' dismal performance in their last game and the pressure from coaching staff, the squad worked hard on their mistakes - and on Tuesday the plan really came together.

Striker Eric Maxamba was Sundowns' star scoring his second hat-trick of the season. Fellow striker Thabang Makoti and midfielders Siphelo Skafu and Benjamin Makabani also found the back of the net with their strikes.

Sundowns further improved their chances of being promoted to the Vodacom League when they clobbered Peninsula 3-1 in Mbekweni on Saturday.

This victory extends their lead to seven points over Ajax Cape Town. The Paarlites only need three wins from their last seven games to ensure being promoted.

Excellent defence by the visitors ensured that Sundowns could only break through before halftime.

Credit goes to midfielder Bongani Mathiso, who after beating Peninsula's fullback gave a perfect past to Makoti who headed his 13th goal of the season into the back of the net.

The other goals were scored by Maxamba and Mathiso himself.

Sundowns play Santos in Thornton on Saturday, and Tuesday is Judgement Day when they are up against the mighty Ajax at the Mbekweni Stadium at 15:30.

Mbekweni-based Cosmos kept their slim hopes of the Castle League title alive when they eased past Jamestown with a 2-1 victory in Mbekweni on Saturday.

Ceres snoei vir Roses United

[ Top ]

Roses United speel Saterdag weg teen Rawsonville.

Downhill MTB action

[ Top ]

SOME of the country's top riders will be participating at the second round of the Western Province downhill mountainbike race series on Sunday at the Language Monument in Paarl.

Among the racers will be current SA champion Gary Barnard.

Racing will begin at midday and beginners are welcome to enter the Fun class. Practice is on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Downhill mountainbike racers have two timed runs down the hillside course, and the top three riders in each age group are awarded medals from the WPMBA.

The top riders will push the limits of fast and flowing Paarl downhill. Its also ideal for riders wanting to give downhill racing a go.

Starting at the top of the Paarl Mountain, the course winds its way past the Monument and then through the lunar landscape of an old quarry before diving into the pine trees for the lower half of the course.

The spectator-friendly finishing straight will provide thrills as the top riders hit a series of jumps and sweeping berms into the finish.

FNB boosts rugby development

[ Top ]

ANCHOR sponsors of schoolrugby-rivalries, First National Bank (FNB), recently gave players from two local schools the oppertunity to play at the St John's College Easter Rugby Festival.

The FNB Invitation team was made up of learners from Klein Nederburg and New Orleans secondary schools. Both schools are made up largely of learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and could not otherwise afford to send their teams to the tournament.

FNB is a key partner of the three schools rugby tournaments which annually take place at King Edward VII School, St Johns College and St Stithians College over Easter.

The bank's involvement in rugby at the schools is part of its Classic Clash programme, which supports traditional rivalries between rugby-playing schools from all communities. The Classic Clash programme has been running for three years.

A new aspect of the project is the linking of the development programme to 15 schools. This will enable FNB to assist more rugby players and to develop the sport within communities that may not previously have had access to such opportunities.

"When FNB got the opportunity to support a development team for the Easter Schools Rugby Festival we wanted to choose a side that would benefit from the experience and yet be able to hold their own," says Francois Pienaar, Strategic Business Development, FNB.

"The Festival can go a long way towards broadening the players' horizons and exposing them to schoolboy rugby at a level beyond what they had previously experienced. We believe that the FNB Invitation Team will do us proud in the future," adds Pienaar.

"It has been a challenge to coach a team made up of players from two schools. The boys gained a lot from the entire experience," adds Garret Watts, coach of FNB team.

The FNB Invitation team locked horns with St Johns in their first match, beating the hosts 29-12.

In their second match they went down 32-6 against Paarl Boys' High. The debutants however, finished the tournament on a high note when they whipped Prince King Edward of Zimbabwe 29-20.

Paarl Boys' High also competed at the St Johns' Rugby Festival.

Although suffering quite a hiding of 33-6 at the hands of Afrikaanse Hoër Seunsskool (Affies) in their final match, they came away victorious earlier against Pretoria Boys' High (47-8) and their Paarl neighbours of Klein Nederburg and New Orleans secondary schools, who made up the FNB Invitation team, 32-6.

In their match against Oakdale on Saturday, Boys' High were once again tops winning 29-3.

* The u.19 team of Paarl Gymnasium had a blistering run at the St Stithians College Rugby Festival.

Gym won all three their matches beating Roodepoort High 44-15, King Edward 41-6 and even HTS Middelburg, who boasted a huge forward pack, 19-14.
